Quantum Magnon Spintronics

Lead Research Organisation: University of Oxford
Department Name: Oxford Physics

Abstract

Spintronics is the area of research dedicated to the study of how 'spin'--the quantum mechanical currency of magnetism--can be used realize new types of information transport, storage, and processing system which surpass the capabilities of those currently found in our computers and other electronic devices. Over the quarter century since its conception this field has branched in many directions. Some have already delivered spectacular real-world impact: spintronic magnetic field sensors are, for example, the bedrock of contemporary hard-disc technology and key players in the choreography of the information age. Others hold exciting promise as the basis for technologies of the future: a host of spintronic sub-disciplines feature among the most active and innovative areas of contemporary solid-state physics research.

Today, with many spintronic sub-fields now well-developed, there is mounting interest in unlocking the rich and subtle physics which connects them. Against this background, this proposal is about recognizing and investigating a new and exciting frontier: the interface between magnonics and magnon spintronics, and quantum information.

The field of magnonics is the area of magnetics dedicated to the science of quasi-particles known as magnons. In certain magnetic systems, magnons are able to play the role of microscopic spin-carrying tokens which can be generated and transmitted over relatively long distances (up to centimetres) and at high speed (many tens of kilometres per second). Magnon spintronics, magnonics' emerging sister discipline, is concerned with structures and devices which involve the passing of spin-information between magnons and electrons, the familiar workhorses of conventional electronics.

As appreciation of the interplay between magnonic and electronic spin-transport deepens, so excitement surrounding its possible contribution to next-generation information technology heightens. To date however, work in magnonics and magnon spintronics has focused on the study of room-temperature magnon and magnon/electron systems in the classical limit. As a result, the field of experimental quantum measurement and information processing has yet to explore what the magnonic theatre has to offer.

This project will develop the first experimental systems dedicated to a broad and systematic investigation of magnonics and magnon spintronics at the quantum level. Building on this, it will take the maiden steps towards accessing the new physical insight and potential technological opportunity at the interface between the rich physics of magnonic and magnon spintronic systems, and the techniques of contemporary quantum measurement and information processing. If successful, it will define and open up an entirely new field of research: quantum magnon spintronics.

Planned Impact

Through their future role in information processing, measurement, and sensing technology, the individual economic and societal impacts of the fields of magnonics, magnon spintronics, and quantum information could be very significant indeed. Embracing them in concert as is proposed in this project has potential to precipitate even more enabling advances.

The project promises to strengthen the UK's position as an incubator for disruptive new technologies. Some possible applications of the experimental systems at the focus of the proposal--particularly those linked to quantum systems--are likely to take decades to make the transition from the laboratory bench to industrial development, whilst others--particularly those related to stand-alone sensor technology--could be translated into commercial products on much shorter timescales. The work will build on-and broaden the scope of-our national scientific capability in the prominent fields of magnonics, magnon spintronics, and quantum information, and allow the UK to take ownership of a new cross-disciplinary technologically relevant research area which straddles all three.

Outreach and public engagement activities which will run hand-in-hand with the scientific work programme will communicate the context, aspirations, and results of the research to the public (adults and children, locally and nationally) in an inspiring, accessible, and imaginative way. A particular highlight will be a highly visible artistic collaboration the acclaimed Oxfordshire artist Angela Palmer. As well adding in a research-specific way to the richness of the project, this will make a very positive contribution to the more general effort to improve the public perception of science and scientists.

Title The oxidation of iron
Description Musical methodology and composition relating to the structure of iron, iron oxide, and related compounds.
Type Of Art Composition/Score
Year Produced 2021
Impact This project, which grew out of the award's focus on dynamic phenomena in magnetic materials has led to a widely publicised public performance and an ongoing recording initiative. The work brings the science of crystallography to the public, alongside the special properties of magnetic materials.

Description The field of magnonics is the area of magnetics dedicated to the science of quasi-particles known as magnons - the quanta of magnetic excitations called spin waves. Spin waves can be thought of rather like a magnetic analogue of sound waves and commonly exist at microwave (gigahertz) frequencies. In certain magnetic systems, magnons are able to play the role of microscopic tokens which carry spin - the quantum mechanical currency of magnetism - over relatively long distances (up to centimetres) and at high speed (many tens of kilometres per second).

The focus of the research funded on this grant is the development of the first experimental systems dedicated to exploring of the physics magnon systems at the quantum level. Over the last twenty four months we have made rapid progress in this direction. In particular, through a series of low-temperature experimental investigations, we have demonstrated - for the first time - the local excitation and detection of propagating spin waves at the single magnon level and the development of hybrid magnon/superconducting circuits. Our results, obtained at millikelvin temperatures, embody a step change in the state-of-the-art and a key breakthrough in magnonics: the very first magnon circuit to operate at the level of single magnons, and the lowest temperature time-resolved studies to date of magnon propagation in the important experimental material yttrium iron garnet.
Exploitation Route The potential of spin waves to provide a platform for information transport and processing is a prominent topic of interest in solid-state physics and our work is attracting growing interest within the solid-state quantum information community. The measurements we have made over the last twelve months pave the way for further quantum-level investigations of systems of propagating magnons - experimental territory which is exciting, technologically relevant, and almost entirely unexplored.

Description Our work is in a very new area and the experimental results we have submitted for publication represent some of the first in the field. Accordingly, their usage outside of the research environment is not yet well-established. However, the work has been presented to a wide range of non-scientific audiences, including members of the general public, and schoolchildren. There have also been extensive discussions about the work with those working in the humanities - particularly those with an interest in (1) the understanding of magnetism in the classical world, (2) the relationship between the history of science and the history of ideas.
