Investigation of molecular and mesoscale clusters in undersaturated glycine aqueous solutions

Description | We investigated populations, size distributions and structure of clusters in aqueous solutions of small organic molecules. Such molecules co-assemble with inorganic molecules, such as silica and iron oxides, to form functional nanomaterials. Molecular and colloidal scale (mesoscale) clusters with radii around 0.3-0.5 nm and 100-150 nm, respectively, were observed using complementary experimental techniques. Molecular clusters are consistent with hydrated monomers and dimers present in equilibrium in aqueous solutions. Mesoscale clusters were observed to be indefinitely stable, in mutual equilibrium within mesostructured solutions across all concentrations investigated. |
Exploitation Route | Understanding of mesostructured solutions is crucial for future work on nucleation of solid phases from solutions and formation of nanomaterials through liquid phase synthesis. |
