Abstract
At least 1.8 billion people globally use a source of drinking water that is faecally contaminated and thus likely to lead to diarrheal illness: nearly 1,000 children die each day due to water and sanitation-related diarrhoeal diseases. Safe drinking-water is required for all usual domestic purposes, including drinking, food preparation and personal hygiene. Diseases related to the consumption of contaminated drinking-water place a major burden on human health. In 2015 663 million people still lacked access to an improved drinking water source, and these are mostly the poor and marginalized. Almost a quarter of those people rely on surface water which is untreated and over 90% live in rural areas. Many people are forced to rely on sources that are microbiologically unsafe, leading to a higher risk of contracting waterborne diseases, including typhoid, hepatitis A and E, polio and cholera.
This proposal aims to develop and assess low cost technologies for safe drinking water which can help address the significant socioeconomic impact of water borne diseases in developing regions. We will establish a centre which will involve a range of different expertise collaborating with universities in Brazil and Colombia and two not-for-profit organisations from Colombia and Mexico. The objectives are to develop low cost technologies to give clean water to the poor people in rural Brazil, Colombia and Mexico, and to develop devices which can be used to assess drinking water quality in remote regions without access to high tech laboratories. These water technologies will be tested under real conditions with the cooperation of the rural communities. We shall also assess any health benefits in the communities following the use of the technologies to give safe water.
The main benefit of this research will be a reduced incidence of water borne diseases in developing regions. This will result in less illness and fewer deaths for children. This will also lead to improved quality of life for families. Females are normally responsible for water in the home and user-friendly, safe water systems will result in less pressure on females. Reduced illness means that children are more able to attend school and there will be less absence from employment for adults. If local communities can get involved in the manufacture, deployment and/or maintenance of water treatment systems, then this may lead to economic development in the communities.

Planned Impact
At least 1.8 billion people globally use a source of drinking water that is faecally contaminated and thus likely to lead to diarrheal illness; nearly 1,000 children die each day due to preventable water and sanitation-related diarrhoeal diseases. The annual global economic burden associated with lack of safe water and sanitation equates to $260. The primary goal of the project is improve health via the provision of safe and affordable household water treatment and safe storage (HWTS) in a number of low-income communities in Brazil, Colombia and Mexico. In collaboration with experienced field based NGO's, we will develop tools & training and support the deployment of optimised HWTS technology empowering local people to take control and manage the production of safe potable water. We will demonstrate a health impact within the local communities who practice HWTS and in doing so improve the education aspirations of children, reduce the workload on women (who traditionally manage water for the household), and through a capacity building process empower the development of social business to generate and sustain long lasting economic impact. WHO report that for every $1 invested in water and sanitation an economic benefit of $4 is returned through reductions in health care costs and increased productivity from reduced illness.
The project is integrally linked with academic institutions and NGO's currently working with local communities to improve access to safe water and measure the health benefits associated with the implementation of HWTS. The NGO's are experienced, well established and supported in part by local government funds. All are well known and trusted within the communities in which they work, and they all currently promote and demonstrate the value of HWTS. During the preparation of the proposal we have built a strong working relationship with each of the South American partners. Dr Fernandez is a Visiting Professor at the University of Medellin (Colombia). The project Advisory Board has been chosen to include an experienced mix of professionals who have conducted field based trials and we will harness this collective experience to ensure that the tools and practices developed and deployed are understood, accepted and trusted by the local communities, increasing the likelihood of long term use of HWTS and the associated long term impact.
Engagement with our experienced stakeholders and local communities from before the start of the project ensures the co-production of knowledge by identification of issues preventing use of the HWTS and development of solutions to these problems. The impact of the project will be measured over an extended period of time through follow up consultations and surveys, which the NGO's readily conduct as part of their ongoing field based projects. In addition, the smart water quality indicators will feed data to the cloud providing a mechanism by which we can remotely monitor both water quality and user compliance permitting a mechanism to provide support and guidance to our project partners working in the field. The project will create a strong legacy through the development of technology and training literature, videos and online content, all of which will remain with our partner NGO's for continued use. Our Centre at Ulster will seek additional funding to grow the trans-disciplinary research both during and after the completion of the project. We will also join the Global Water Sanitation and Hygiene Cluster (a partnership grouping 32 partners aiming to improve the coordination and the humanitarian response in the WASH sector) to share our knowledge, disseminate the outputs of the project and encourage the adoption of appropriate HWTS in other areas of the world and link with existing research in the sector - UNESCO Safe Drinking Water and Sanitation Programme and the EU H2020 WaterSpoutt project.

| Description | SAFEWATER has generated significant new findings and the key findings are discussed below, some of which are still to be subject to peer review. Engagement with the communities, implementation of the water treatment systems, monitoring of water quality, monitoring of health indicators and behaviour observation has led to some important findings. The SAFEWATER treatment systems presented a paradigm shift in providing sufficient safe drinking water at household level (150-250 L in one or two hours) and reduce the need for communities to use water from other potentially unsafe sources. There was an improvement in the bacteriological water quality for households and there was observed decrease in the reported incidence of diarrhoea in the communities, following the implementation of the water treatment systems. Women have reported improvements in their quality of life in terms of physical health, mental health, sacurity and making life easier. The communities reported a reduced reliance on untreated water sources. The communities were more aware of the water quality and the potential negative health effects of drinking water that was untreated. The systems were reliable and required minimal maintenance over the course of the field trials and beyond (over 12 months). Maintenance of the water treatment systems and monitoring of water quality will remain to be a key barrier to sustainability beyond the life of this project, as with similar projects. With SAFEWATER we managed to train community technicians to maintain the systems and to detect problems following malfunction. The communities have taken ownership of the systems and are developing their own financial strategies for sustainability. Recontamination of water within a small number of systems in the treated water tank was observed. It was determined that it was probably better to seal the treated water tank than use a cleaning regime. Recontamination at the tap was also problematic. Regular cleaning of the taps was recommended, and cleaning protocols were shared with the householders. The systems operated using grid electricity both in Colombia and Mexico, with the exception of two households off grid which used PV. Many of the systems in Colombia were damaged in electrical storms. Damaged controllers had to be returned to Ulster for repair and systems were adapted with surge protectors. For Mexico access to water was seasonal with householders drawing water from a variety of sources. To implement the SAFEWATER water treatment systems, access to sufficient water was a necessity. Systems were designed to deliver enough treated water per day for each household (150 L for Colombia, 250 L for Mexico). For water treatment systems in remote locations it would be extremely beneficial to have communications with the systems to alert a community technician to the problem; however, mobile communications are not appropriate in many cases where the network coverage is poor. |
| Exploitation Route | The SAFEWATER project provides a strong argument for the implementation of water treatment systems which can provide sufficient safe potable water for households on a daily basis. For communities to implement such systems, access to sufficient water is a requirement and therefore implementation in regions which are under water stress may prove problematic without implementation of water storage solutions. Hygiene within the households and maintenance of the water treatment systems is required for best outcomes. For water quality monitoring, the use of portable electronic devices would be desirable to overcome barriers in relation to data integrity and skills gaps. Others implementing technological solutions in marginalised communities can utilise and learn from the data and findings of SAFEWATER. |

| Description | Participation in the SAFEWATER project allowed the NGO Cantaro Azul to leverage 2.3 M USD funding from the Kellogg Foundation for a water and sanitation project in Mexico. Cantaro has been able to grow their research portfolio now collaborating with other Universities internationally. Cantaro was able to install water treatment systems in one health clinic and two informal refugee settlements and they were able to implement handwashing stations as a intervention during the COVID pandemic. CTA, NGO partner in Colombia have been able to introduce testing for anaemia in children in collaboration with local health authorities, which is also beyond the original scope of the project. CTA is part of the Water Coalition in Colombia, a multisectoral group made up of The Nature Conservancy, the Latin American Alliance of Water Funds, the Latin American Conservation Council (LACC) and other partners from government, industry, the financial sector, civil society, and organizations non-governmental organizations, and Fundación Grupo Argos FGA, a business foundation. Its mission is to contribute to the long-term water security of ecosystems, people and the economy, strengthening water governance through public-private partnerships. Within the framework of this, the FGA and the CTA have generated two contracts to install five SAFEWATER systems in five rural schools. Currently three systems have been installed in three rural schools in the department of Antioquia and in the next month the other two will be installed in two other rural schools. The installation has been accompanied by awareness and training on the operation, use and maintenance of the systems. The communities have taken ownership of the water treatment systems and are implementing their own sustainability plans including finance. |

| Impact | Despite the global consensus that child growth is a key indicator of child nutrition and health, the development of low-cost, accurate and child-friendly growth measurement devices that are fit for purpose in LMICs remains elusive. Recognising these limitations, UNICEF recently published a Target Product Profile (TPP) calling for the development of new state-of-the-art height and length measurement devices. The purpose of this pilot product designed by the GCRF SAFEWATER health and Nutrition team is to examine current growth measurement devices in relation to this UNICEF TPP requirement and set the stage for the development of new devices. The findings show that there is a gap in the product market for accurate portable length and height measurement devices. In particular, our review indicates that devices in current use generally lack capabilities for automated data recording and transfer of data to a central database, and are often not child-friendly. We incorporated the findings into the development of such device tested during SAFEWATER field trials to assess the health of community members benefited by clean water. |

The significance of Campylobacter & waterborne protozoa interactions, (2) A master-class in working with MS-2 coliphage for water treatment devices, and (3) The application of MinION Shotgun sequencing for analysing water. The training was attended by 12 specialists who could learn from SAFEWATER microbiology techniques applied to water quality monitoring and share knowledge on what could be replicated or adapted to the social-economic context of Chiapas Region in Mexico. The training was also a great opportunity for partnership development and discussion on future joint-projects with Ecosur, further extending Safewater reach in Mexico. |

| Results and Impact | SAFEWATER held an event as part of Northern Ireland Science Festival at Ulster University Jordanstown Campus on 12 of February 2020. There were two sessions, one in the morning and a second in the afternoon counting on 4 to 5 SAFEWATER team members. There were 80 primary schools (P7) kids and another eight home-schooled aged 4-11 years. During this event, the SAFEWATER team explained to the audience the general principle of water purification with particular focus on the aim of SAFEWATER project - delivering a low-cost technology to selected rural communities in Latin America. The team described the water challenges in Latin America and showed 3D animation of a Mexican kitchen. SAFEWATER team discussed and demonstrated another water treatment low-cost technologies that people use around the world and presented ceramic filtration, chlorination, solar disinfection, coagulation by meringue seeds, et al. There was also a demonstration of microscope slides with bacteria and had a general discussion with children about waterborne diseases. In practical terms, SAFEWATER taught children how to make their own sand filter from the surrounding material e.g. sand, gravel, pebbles, charcoal. The event was highly successful and received extremely positive feedback from the parents who came with children. Please see below. " I just wanted to say a huge thank you to you and your colleagues for the engineering event which we attended as a family on Wednesday afternoon (12 February). It was very well organized with such a variety of types of engineering represented in addition to the very engaging Scientific Sue. The children really enjoyed the time and several of the boys said that they could have talked to the engineers at the stands all day! Thank you to your student volunteers also who were such great ambassadors for your institution - passionate about what they are studying and researching and very comfortable talking about it in a way which was appropriate for non-specialists, including small children! My children were all very surprised that the event had been at no cost to ourselves. Thank you for making it a very enjoyable and inspiring educational outing." |

| Results and Impact | As part of the Northern Ireland Science Festival NIBEC, Ulster University, organised the Health Technologies Futures event, in which ca. 190 school children came in from local primary schools to learn about innovations in Health Technologies, and as part of this, we presented the SAFEWATER interactive workshop which informed the children about the challenge of providing safe drinking water in developing regions, how to use low cost technologies to treat water, and how to determine if water is safe to drink. The school children had a engaging and enjoyable experience. |

Around 12 members of the SAFEWATER team, including PDRAs and PhD students contributed to the interactive SAFEWATER stand which included 'build your own water filter', identification of bacteria under a microscope, and a quiz on waterborne disease. |

Presentation on using Behaviour analysis to increase end user uptake of safe drinking water technologies. These water technologies will be tested under real conditions with the cooperation of the rural communities with an emphasis on analysing the antecedent, behavioural, and consequential reasons for low levels of uptake.The presentation reported on initial functional assessments, task analyses, and group contingencies put in place to assess and address these issues.The presentation was followed by questions and informal conversations subsequent to the meeting, about the methods proposed and possible intervention strategies in particular. | Results and Impact | SAFEWATER hosted its 3rd Annual Project Meeting in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico from 17th to 20th of February 2020. The week-long programme was designed to engage all consortium organisations, to include Ulster University(UU), Fundacion Cantaro Azul (CA), Centro de Ciencia y Tecnologia de Antioquia (CTA), University of Medellin (UofM) and University of Sao Paulo (USP). The event also counted on the participation of SAFEWATERExternal Advisory Board Members, based in Sao Paulo Water Management Company (SABESP), The Royal College of Surgeons Ireland, Lancaster University, Cambridge University, DSA Ireland and UKRI-GCRF. The event promoted discussions around a consolidated transdisciplinary plan for the implementation of SAFEWATER field trials in Colombia and Mexico and the visit to two indigenous rural communities in Chiapas where SAFEWATER pilot water treatment prototypes where installed. The event promoted team building, equitable partnerships, action plans on research methodologies and resources and communication management as well as enhanced knowledge on the real application of the study considering the socialeconomic and demography context of the households participant in the study. |

Arsalan presented the challenge of developing a household water treatment (HWT) system that can provide enough clean water (>50 litres per person per day) for different uses to avoid cross-contamination - showcasing to the audience the solution that has been developed by SAFEWATER. This is an excellent example of project dissemination as well as stakeholder engagement, including the International community of chemical engineers (@IChemE) and a networking opportunity for our early-career researcher. |

| Results and Impact | On 06th September 2019, SAFEWATER organised an Industry Engagement Day in Brazil, where the team was hosted by Sao Paulo Water Management Company (SABESP) to build links and capacity with one of the largest global water providers in terms of population served. SAFEWATER was presented with an overview of the company and the appetite for innovation, by the SABESP Regulatory Affairs and Research, Technological Development and Innovation teams. Opportunities for research and capacity building were shared by the SafeWater team. Opportunities for funding to enable partnership development were presented by the Project Manager for Higher Education and Science at the British Council and by the Science Programmes and International Partnerships Manager at Sao Paulo Funding Agency (FAPESP). Several topics for future collaboration (sensing/treatment technology and capacity building through educational/training partnerships) are being investigated, including an application to the FAPESP/SABEP 2020 funding call. This meeting also permitted that Ulster University (at the institutional level) developed a joint project with the British Council to expand its reach in Brazil. |

| Results and Impact | SAFEWATER team hosted an International Workshop at University of Sao Paulo, Brazil sharing knowledge of the SafeWater project and hearing key stakeholders discuss water, hygiene and sanitation challenges in Brazil (50 attendees). Following formal introductions by Faculty and USP, presentations from NGO groups and Government Agencies (EMBRAPA, Iniciativa Verde, CATI) - those currently providing solutions to people in rural Brazil - permitted the SafeWater team to gain an insight into the complexities associated with provision of appropriate WASH solutions across a huge country with wide-ranging political, geographical and socio-economic factors. Short presentations from aligned academic research (USP, UNICAMP, UFSCar Cambridge, NEdPro Global Centre for Nutrition & Health) demonstrated leading research capacity in engineering/science disciplines aligned to water treatment, pathogen detection and nutrition. A networking session was followed by a panel discussion identifying potential opportunities for future collaborations between SafeWater team members and Brazilian organisations. There was particular interest in SAFEWATER remote microbial sensing technology and potential to develop institutional agreements; such as Memoranda of Understanding with USP and academic partners and formal membership of USP's Engineering International Exchange programme. SAFEWATER has also agreed on joint-applications to funding opportunities in Brazil with EMBRAPA and the NGO Iniciativa Verde. |

The Transdisciplinary Workshop brought together collaborators from all SAFEWATER work packages and also counted on the important presence of Jacinta Greene, SAFEWATER Advisory Board Member and Ane Galdos, SAFEWATER team member at Fundacion Cantaro Azul in Mexico, they delivered a talk on `Global Nutrition and Health` and, `the Learnings and Challenges for Safe Drinking Water Provision Assessment: Los Altos Region Context`, respectively. More than 20 participants contributed to the discussions. The workshop was a crucial initiative for the alignment of the activities anticipating the field trials in Latin America, including co-design from a third sector and academic perspective on research methodologies to be used in Mexico and data collection management. | Results and Impact | SAFEWATER open data software of choice, the Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) is the web platform chosen by us to build, manage and capture data during SAFEWATER Field Trials. REDcap was chosen over other similar tools based on its data security ground, GPS location tracking system, mobile app to collect data offline, electronic and audio consent function, data quality rules and automated export procedures for seamless data- all essential features for our data collection, particularly in remote rural communities, with and without internet access. SAFEWATER data collection training webinar (REDCap) was successfully delivered on the 7th of May by Dr Santosh Gaihre and Dr Samuel Ginja. Thirteen staff members participated, including 3 senior academics, 9 early and mid-career researchers and a project manager from four of our cohort organisations; Ulster University; University of Medellin; Cantaro Azul, and University of Sao Paulo. The overall feedback from the post-training evaluation was very positive. Most of the participants had no prior knowledge of the software and at the end of the course were able to collect and send data using the REDCap tool, demonstrating practical applicability of knowledge increase. The respondents appreciated the interactive learning environment and said that the session was useful and would highly recommend it to other colleagues. |

| Results and Impact | SAFEWATER PhD Mwansa Jere and PDRAs Santosh Gaihre, Samuel Ginja & William Snelling raised awareness about global health issues directly connected to untreated water to 60 female students at the `Girls on Course` event held at Ulster University in Coleraine - NI. SAFEWATER discussed STEM subjects, including microbiology and public health with the female pupils who could learn more about the benefits of having safe drinking water at home and the gender and social-economic burdens associated with the water challenge in developing countries. |
