Description | By distributing an online survey amongst travellers residing in the UK, we better understand the factors contributing to their privacy concerns regarding the collection and sharing of their personal information in the online travel environment. We also gain preliminary understanding on the effects of privacy concerns on travellers' willingness to share various types of personal information, including biographic, identifiers, biometric, and behavioral data, as well as how they respond to different incentives such as cash and privacy assurances. |
Exploitation Route | Others may use our findings to develop most effective strategies to incentify travellers to share their data with travel service providers and to address the influencing factors in order to reduce privacy concerns. |

PI Contribution | We participated in the WTTC's strategic workshop for the Seamless Traveller Journey (STJ) Programme on 7 November 2018 in Seattle, WA, USA. This is a focused meeting amongst private sector organizations in the travel industry to conceptualise the use of biometrics and digital identity for travel facilitation. Our team, represented by PI Iis Tussyadiah, contributed to the discussion around attitudinal and behavioral aspects of travelers with regards to privacy aroung the collection and sharing of biometrics. PI Iis Tussyadiah also attended another strategic workshop for STJ during the WTTC global summit in Seville, Spain, 2-4 April 2019. We contributed to the discussions on the latest development of the systems. |
Collaborator Contribution | WTTC introduced the team to other relevant players in the industry that we followed up with interviews on their current approaches to privacy preservation of personal data. These include Carnival and Carnival UK, Clear, ACI (Airport Council International), IATA (International Air Transport Association), MasterCard, and WEF (World Economic Forum). We are maintaining contact with these partners to develop ideas further. |
Impact | No significant outcome yet. However, PI Tussyadiah (listed as International Federation for IT and Travel & Tourism) was recognised as a contributor in the WTTC's STJ Situation Report dated June 2019. |
