Abstract

Description The research on the initial SRF grant is now completed, though the operation of the Centre for Sustainable Road Freight is continuing under industry funding and a follow-on grant from EPSRC (2018-2023).
We have confirmed the usefulness of tow tank testing for investigations of trailer underbody flows. New knowledge on trailer wake flows has been established, linking flow structure and unsteadiness to drag and geometric details. A number of add-on devices have been tested and their effect on drag and flow structure has been quantified. Recommendations for methods to improve the aerodynamic performance of trailers will be made in due course. We have developed novel methods for collecting data from vehicles in-service and from live logistics systems. We have developed methods for comparing vehicle performance in service using 'big data' methods and data collected in-service. We have developed methods for automatically identifying parameter values for vehicle simulations using measured data. We have developed systems for logistics and vehicle data collection and data management. We have generated some major findings about prospects for electrification of road freight and tools for helping freight operators transition their fleets to electric operations. We are currently developing a large-scale applications. We have developed a substantial capability for agent-based-modelling of logistics and have applied this to a wide range of applications. We have developed a substantial new activity in cold chain logistics and its application to vaccine distribution.

Description As a part of project work we hold bi-annual SRF Policy Working Group meetings to disseminate the key findings from various SRF projects to stakeholders from local and national government, trade bodies, industry & academia. Based on the outcomes of the research, a series of policy briefings has also been published (https://www.csrf.ac.uk/outputs-home/policy-briefings-2/). We also responded to various public consultations related to sustainability of the road freight sector in the UK (e.g. the most recent submission was the response to the Department for Transport's Future of Freight Roundtables by Julian Allen and Maja Piecyk). It is expected that dissemination activities of the Centre will help national and international policy makers to develop policy measures and interventions aimed at long-term improvements of sustainability of road freight transport and logistics systems. The tools developed in the project support road freight operators in their decision making processes, and can help them identify the best ways to reduce environmental impact of their activities. It is too early for significant impact but in the long term this will help reduce the environmental impact of road freight, extend the life or road infrastructure, and may lead to wider societal consequences.
