Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description The project was concieved to establish is two technologies: Optical amplification and Mulitple-input multiple-output (MIMO) could be used to increase the data rate and reliability of free space optical communication links for both core and access networks.

Our research found that, unlike single-input systems, the combination of optical amplification and MIMO can be rapidly degraded by mode-dependent loss in the optical amplifier, which further degrades the fading caused by modepdependent loss in the free-space channel itself. The use of optical amplification thus requires further refinement of the amplifier design, which is underway via additonal industrial partners.

On the other hand, we demonstrated very high levels of performance in terms of net capacity, achieving a record single wavelength capacity of more than 1 Tbit/s, and significant increases in the resilience to atmospheric turbulence with a total capacity exceeding 500Gbit/s per wavelength. Exceeding the objectives for this aspect of the project.
Exploitation Route Novel optical amplifier designs resulting from knowledge derived from the project will be eploited by UK industrial partners.
High capacity MIMO demonstrations have elicited interest from major satellite service providers, and work is under way to allow exploitation of the research in the context of satllite communications via follow on projects.
