Industrial Decarbonisation Research and Innovation Centre (IDRIC)

Lead Research Organisation: Heriot-Watt University
Department Name: Sch of Engineering and Physical Science

Abstract

The decarbonisation of industrial clusters is of critical importance to the UK's ambitions of cutting greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. The UK Industrial Decarbonisation Challenge (IDC) of the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF) aims to establish the world's first net-zero carbon industrial cluster by 2040 and at least one low-carbon cluster by 2030.

The Industrial Decarbonisation Research and Innovation Centre (IDRIC) has been formed to support this Challenge through funding a multidisciplinary research and innovation centre, which currently does not exist at the scale, to accelerate decarbonisation of industrial clusters.

IDRIC works with academia, industry, government and other stakeholders to deliver the multidisciplinary research and innovation agenda needed to decarbonise the UK's industrial clusters. IDRIC's research and innovation programme is delivered through a range of activities that enable industry-led, multidisciplinary research in cross-cutting areas of technology, policy, economics and regulation.

IDRIC connects and empowers the UK industrial decarbonisation community to deliver an impactful innovation hub for industrial decarbonisation. The establishment of IDRIC as the "one stop shop" for research and innovation, as well as knowledge exchange, regulation, policy and key skills will be beneficial across the industry sectors and clusters.
In summary, IDRIC will connect stakeholders, inspire and deliver innovation and maximise impact to help the UK industrial clusters to grow our existing energy intensive industrial sectors, and to attract new, advanced manufacturing industries of the future.

Results and Impact Workshops on the subject of disability in research careers highlighting how to support people with disabilities. 1st disability workshop focused on 'endometriosis' and the 2nd disability workshop focused on 'neurodiversity'.

Those workshops sparked questions and discussions on what can partners do better in terms of EDI practice in their workplace (recruitment, environment - place to work, employees benefits, etc.). It raised the fact that there is a need for the creation of an EDI best-practice to support partners in their EDI engagements.

Results and Impact IDRIC's 'You can't be what you can't see' is a video project that will be used with partners in education and mentoring programmes. The three to seven minute videos showcase the diversity of individuals currently involved with research relating to industrial decarbonisation. The videos give a sense of the diverse career routes taken by people currently working in partnership with IDRIC and are designed to inspire the next generation to consider a career in decarbonisation. Hopefully this will be of great support to school counsellors/teachers and have a great impact to educational and skill level of workforce improvement. Furthermore, we hope this will have a change in public attitudes towards decarbonisation and will provide a better understanding on the various career paths in this area.

Results and Impact Following on from the IDRIC Policy Forum and Prioritisation Workshop, the Industrial Decarbonisation Policy Forum broadened policy discussions to include key trade organisations and policymakers from central and devolved governments. Using the discussion paper produced following the previous workshop, this policy forum identified areas of common interest between IDRIC and participating organisations, and on that basis explore opportunities for collaboration and coordination of activity, with discussion informed by ongoing policy development in government departments. There was representation from policy makers, industry trade bodies, other relevant organisations in climate change. For example, attendees included UK government (BEIS) and devolved administrations (Scottish and Welsh Governments), UKRI, the Climate Change Committee, sector trade organisations (incl. Hydrogen UK, the NW Hydrogen Alliance, Scottish Hydrogen and Fuel Association, Engineering Construction Industry Training Board, Carbon Capture and Storage Association, Make UK), IDRIC academic and industry partners from across UK industrial clusters. The event demonstrated IDRIC's strong convening power and its key role in facilitating dialogue on industrial decarbonisation policy across stakeholders, evidenced by a) multiple bi-lateral connections created, both with IDRIC and amongst other attending stakeholders during the event; b) highly positive feedback from multiple participants about the benefit of this forum, interest in follow-up events and engagement opportunities, as well as many suggestions for additional stakeholders and contacts we should include in future engagements.

From this workshop, a discussion paper was produced summarising IDRIC's areas of policy focus, and which formed the basis for a second iteration of the Policy Forum, held in March. 7. The discussions achieved a broad consensus around key policy priorities for industrial decarbonisation amongst our partners, and clearly demonstrated the need for collaboration across clusters for advancing effective policy solutions. IDRIC's key role in facilitating collaboration and dialogue across clusters was recognised in participants' feedback and eagerness to attend the follow-up event, where the discussion paper setting out IDRIC's policy agenda based on these discussions was then welcomed and endorsed. The event also led to a range of bilateral connections between partners to follow up on specific policy challenges.

The study of multiphase flow of hydrogen in porous media (with applications to large scale underground hydrogen storage) is a new area of research so sharing knowledge from research is crucial in raising awareness within industry and government bodies on existence and feasibility of hydrogen storage in subsurface. This was the basis for collaboration with industrial partners in IDRIC Wave II.
