Decarbonisation Of Food Cold Chain Through Integrated Hydrogen Technologies

Lead Research Organisation: University of Nottingham
Department Name: Faculty of Engineering

Abstract

The UK government is committed to reducing carbon emissions to net zero by 2050. In order to meet this commitment, it is essential that heating and cooling is decarbonised as it accounts for over a third of CO2 emissions in the UK. A potential solution would be the establishment of a hydrogen-based energy infrastructure facilitating the replacement of fossil fuels by sustainable energy sources. Central to a future energy system based upon hydrogen would be the deployment of hydrogen fuel cells (HFCs) to convert sustainably derived hydrogen (e.g. from solar and wind) to electricity, as they are highly efficient, economic and scalable. The global market for fuel cells is projected to reach US$14. 6 billion by 2027, and the global demand for hydrogen is now over 70Mt rising by 5 Mt a year. If hydrogen is to be an integral part of the UK's future energy system and assist in decarbonisation of heating and cooling, then technologies are required to facilitate the safe and efficient delivery of hydrogen to end use applications. We propose the development of integrated hydrogen technologies that will simultaneously provide the controlled release of hydrogen to service fuel cell power needs and cold production. Key to this technology is the endothermic decomposition of a metal hydride (MH) store to generate cooling, with the resultant hydrogen supplying a fuel cell. By transitioning to a hydrogen-based net-zero economy, our new technology provides an opportunity to assist in the decarbonisation of the UK food chain (agricultural production, manufacturing, distribution, retail and consumption) which is responsible for 18% of the total UK energy use or 115 MtCO2 emissions.

Description We have achieved a true integrated approach where fundamental studies of computational materials modelling and machine learning have been put to good use to not only understand metal hydride systems but also help to select new metal hydride materials. This has been further integrated at the engineering level where multiphysics numerical models of cooling the truck have demonstrated the practical placement of the cooling tanks and airflow modelled along with other effects such as door opening required for the application. This has then led to further integration and demonstration by building a quarter size model and example tanks that can be filled with candidate metal hydride materials. The outputs of which will continue to be tested beyond the project end date due to its relevance to other applications and designs.

Our study also explored stakeholder perspectives on hydrogen-fuelled refrigerated vehicles in the food cold chain, focusing on three key sectors: food manufacturing, logistics services, and supermarkets. Through interviews with a diverse range of stakeholders-including drivers, maintenance teams, fleet managers, and senior executives-we identified four distinct viewpoints that cut across job roles and industry segments:
1. "Everyone Has a Part to Play" - These stakeholders are optimistic about hydrogen technology but see significant systemic barriers to adoption. They emphasise the need for greater industry and policy support before hydrogen can become viable in food cold chain logistics.
2. "It Is an Economic and Performance Threat" - This group is primarily concerned with the financial burden and operational performance of hydrogen-powered vehicles. Economic viability is their main focus, and they are less engaged with other barriers to adoption.
3. "Worried About the Existing Road Freight" - While supportive of hydrogen as a long-term solution, these stakeholders are concerned about the broader transition process. Their perspective extends beyond vehicle adoption to include hydrogen production, infrastructure, and supply chain integration.
4. "Tech-Savvy but Worried About Others' Scepticism" - This group embraces hydrogen technology but perceives resistance from others as a key challenge to its adoption. They believe overcoming industry-wide scepticism is essential for progress.
Exploitation Route As part of this project, we developed new dataset and approach which could be used for other researchers in the community to discover new metal hydride materials that are suitable for integrated hydrogen storage and refrigeration application.

Our findings from user-centred study highlight the complexity of attitudes towards hydrogen adoption in the food cold chain. Rather than a simple divide between supporters and opponents, perspectives are shaped by a mix of economic, technical, and systemic considerations. Our study underscores the importance of addressing social and organisational challenges alongside technological and infrastructural developments to accelerate the net-zero transition in road freight logistics.

An example of how the outcomes of this project can be used by others is the socio-economic work teams integration with the technical parts of the project led to a new collaboration on project using their combined learning which assessed the social and technical challenges facing the energy requirements of East Midlands Airport funded by Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) £164k and led to a recently published report entitled
