UK Carbon Capture and Storage Research Community Network+ (UKCCSRC 2022)

Lead Research Organisation: University of Sheffield
Department Name: Mechanical Engineering

Abstract

The UK is seeing an unprecedented rise in CCS activity, with deployment planned to go from currently nothing to 10 million tonnes of CO2 captured and stored per year by 2030, followed by two decades with average growth of 10-15% per year to deliver around 100 MtCO2/yr by 2050 to underpin the UK's net-zero target. Networking by the UKCCS Research Centre, as an inclusive and open virtual national hub, has helped to start now-mainstream UK initiatives on industrial decarbonisation (2012) and CCS clusters (2016) and has continued to grow with innovative on-line activities and focused support throughout the COVID epidemic. This proposal will deliver seamless continuity and expansion of these services to a UK CCS community currently with over 600 academic members (including ECRs) and over 1000 wider network links that has to expand and diversify rapidly to deliver the 2030 targets and will also help to develop UK capacity to meet the equally-great challenges of the following decades.

Our overall aim is to maintain a UK scientific lead in CCS, behind only the much larger USA and China, that the existence of an inclusive EPSRC-supported CCS network since 2009 has helped to establish, and to ensure that this lead is translated into wealth creation and commercial advantages for the UK via strong and focused networking with a successful CCS industry sector.

People, principles and planning are the keys to successful networking. The UKCCSRC 2022 delivery team brings a diverse set of talents and backgrounds, a rigorous ethos of inclusivity, openness, scientific excellence, hard work and friendly engagement, and includes solid experience, over many years, of how to plan and deliver a networking programme, with activities and services that are educational, in the broadest sense, and also enjoyable and exciting.

The Network+ programme will help the UK get the most value from its world-leading CCS, and wider, academic community by linking research producers and research users, with four main tasks:
1) To support the rapid growth planned in UK deployment across the full range of CCS activities required for delivering net-zero (i.e. capture from all sources and all forms of secure, long-term storage, and the full range of states of commercial readiness) using the best science available.
2) To develop the new science to underpin future improvements and cost reduction in areas of CCS where the UK has a strategic need or advantage and help translate this into a wealth-creating UK industry sector.
3) To grow the capacity in people, infrastructure and institutions to meet the sustained long-term expansion required in CCS out to 2050 and beyond.
4) To devise and deliver open-access fast-track research projects.

Developments to underpin the achievement of these objectives include:
a) To at least double academic membership from about 300 to 600, including many more specialists in related fields.
b) Industry - because of a much wider range of companies getting engaged with CCS this is expected to rise to at least 100 industry participants.
c) Government and regulation engagement - continue as trusted independent experts, with specialised knowledge transfer to support this key group of stakeholders.
d) Early Career Researchers - grow existing programme of >300 ECRs to double this number, with welcoming and inclusive knowledge exchange and networks in CCS for new arrivals.
e) International links with CCS partner organisations worldwide, facilitate networking and help build collaborative research activities.
f) Build on established network contacts (1600+) to grow regular conference programme from ~150 per meeting to ~300.
g) Higher profile for academic CCS research through media, knowledge sharing and enhanced Web presence as national interest in CCS grows.
h) A £1M budget for flexible funding of fast-track projects, with open calls following well-established procedures, including independent administration and a high standar

Description The most significant achievements for the project to date are:

NETWORKING
i) The numbers of stakeholders engaged in all categories have increased significantly, see below for details
ii) In particular, engagement via LinkedIn has grown very significantly over the course of UKCCSRC 2022, with currently 9.3k followers - this is a prime route for connecting with industry stakeholders.
iii) The ECR programme has grown significantly and seen some major developments, in particular the UKCCSRC leading the establishment of a regular joint ECR event with other hubs.

RESEARCH
i) UKCCSRC 2022 has run a flexible funding call every year, with 39 projects totaling over £1M awarded, run by the Secretariat and Board and not involving UKCCSRC academics and with very high standards for inclusivity and independent expert review. Flex program impacts are noted separately in the project entries and updated in the individual project pages on the UKCCSRC web site.
ii) Environmental aspects of CCS - the UKCCSRC 2022 grant has supported UK regulators by working closely with the Environment Agency and Defra to review evidence on CO2 capture technology performance and inform staff, with UKCCSRC research on increasing CO2 capture rates contributing directly to more ambitious targets for the industry.

MEETING AWARD OBJECTIVES
The proposal stated that the UKCCSRC 2022 Network+ programme will help the UK get the most value from its world-leading CCS, and wider academic community by linking research producers and research users, with the four main objectives shown below. Ways in which they have been delivered to date are shown as bullet points after the numbered objective heading:

1) To support the rapid growth planned in UK deployment across the full range of CCS activities required for delivering net-zero (i.e. capture from all sources and all forms of secure, long-term storage, and the full range of states of commercial readiness) using the best science available.
• Detailed engagement with DESNZ, the Environment Agency, the UK Investment Bank and other regulator and finance stakeholders through working groups, consultations, individual meetings and CPD courses
• Including an emphasis on how to manage technology risks with simple, readily-understood, 'rules' - https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/basic-precautions-long-term-research-can-greatly-improve-jon-gibbins
• And supported by an updated technology Evidence Review - https://ukccsrc.ac.uk/best-available-technology-bat-information-for-ccs/
• Strong CCS practitioner involvement in flexible funding research reviewing and industrial co-support for a number of projects
• Regular communications direct to industry stakeholders via LinkedIn

2) To develop the new science to underpin future improvements and cost reduction in areas of CCS where the UK has a strategic need or advantage and help translate this into a wealth-creating UK industry sector.
• The flexible funding research programme is the main vehicle to deliver this objective, see 4) below for more details; work on ultra-high point source capture rates and CO2 removal from the air using a range of approaches to underpin UK net zero targets are some examples

3) To grow the capacity in people, infrastructure and institutions to meet the sustained long-term expansion required in CCS out to 2050 and beyond.
• See the list of targeted developments a) to f) below

4) To devise and deliver open-access fast-track research projects.
• Three flexible funding calls were held in 2022,2023 and 2024 delivering 39 projects with a total budget of £1,020,268. For further details see:
https://ukccsrc.ac.uk/research/flexible-funding/flexible-funding-2022/
https://ukccsrc.ac.uk/research/flexible-funding/flexible-funding-2023/
https://ukccsrc.ac.uk/research/flexible-funding/flexible-funding-2024/

Developments identified in the proposal to underpin the achievement of these objectives include a) to f) below, with achievements shown as bullet points:

a) To at least double academic membership from about 300 to 600, including many more specialists in related fields.
• Academic membership currently stand at 417

b) Industry - because of a much wider range of companies getting engaged with CCS this is expected to rise to at least 100 industry participants.
• This classification is not recorded directly in member data, but the overall UKCCSRC network size has increased from 1600 to 2500 with anecdotal estimates of many more industry attendees at conferences.
• LinkedIn has been a proven way to reach industry, with top article/posting views regularly coming from major industry CCS stakeholders

c) Government and regulation engagement - continue as trusted independent experts, with specialised knowledge transfer to support this key group of stakeholders.
• The two CPD courses for government and regulators have been a major vehicle for this - https://ukccsrc.ac.uk/ccs-training/
These are UKCCSRC-delivered, CPD-accredited CCS training courses for industry, government and regulators to attend in 2023 and 2024. The courses were delivered by leading academics and trusted stakeholders in CCS and provided both a high-level overview of the CCS chain exploring specific topics, including CO2 capture, transport, storage, and public perception, as well as parallel sessions in BECCS, DACCS, whole systems, pipeline transport planning and more. https://ukccsrc.ac.uk/ccs-training-course-sheffield-5-6-september-2023/ ; https://ukccsrc.ac.uk/ccs-training-course-sheffield-4-5-november-2024/
• The technology Evidence Review and rules for mitigating technology risks already noted also helped deliver this objective
• UKCCSRC members and staff have also being involved in very extensive participation in working groups, consultations and personal discussions and briefings.
• Engagement with the National Audit Office in their oversight of UK CCUS deployment has included a multi-stakeholder Knowledge Exchange workshop - https://ukccsrc.ac.uk/ukccsrc-workshop-lessons-amine-post-combustion-projects-sept-2024/
• For a paper on "Supporting Policy Makers and Regulators with CCS Deployment" see https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=5065763

Description Details of emerging economic and societal impact arising from the UKCCSRC 2022 award On 24 October, 2024 the UK government announced a £22bn Track 1 CCS Clusters programme https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/uk-ccs-two-co2-ts-networks-three-capture-projects-enablers-gibbins-emzbe, based on CO2 transport and storage systems on Teesside and in the North West serving three 'anchor' CO2 capture projects. UKCCSRC contributions to this can be tracked back to at least 2016, but the recent, very large, expansion in government and regulator activity needed to bring these first projects to the finishing line has been directly supported by the UKCCSRC 2022 grant. How the findings from the UKCCSRC 2022 award are impacting the public, private and NGO sectors Permitting for CO2 capture projects is a major element in CCS deployment and two out of the three projects announced so far use the amine post-combustion capture technology covered in the UKCCSRC's Evidence Review and a number of flexible funding research projects. The UKCCSRC's role is described in the official guidance issued by the Environment Agency - https://www.gov.uk/guidance/post-combustion-carbon-dioxide-capture-best-available-techniques-bat - which includes the acknowledgement: "These environmental regulators (referred to as 'the regulators') worked with the UK CCS Research Centre [https://ukccsrc.ac.uk/], industry and other stakeholders to develop an 'evidence review' [https://ukccsrc.ac.uk/best-available-technology-bat-information-for-ccs/] which informs this guidance: • Environment Agency • Natural Resources Wales • Northern Ireland Environment Agency (an executive agency of the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs)" The UKCCSRC has also actively promoted a fully inclusive engagement with a wide range of stakeholders, including GNGOs - e.g. https://ukccsrc.ac.uk/teams/dr-niall-macfadyen-c-eng/. Challenges overcome to achieve impact A major challenge in achieving the impacts above - and on many aspects of CCS - has been excessive industrial secrecy by some companies, in particular regarding activities that have not gone entirely well - which are, of course, details that are essential to publicise to stop other people making the same mistakes and to challenge researchers to find solutions. Detailed analysis and cross-referencing of the results that are available has been used with some success to, at least partly, address this challenge and the UKCCSRC has also worked hard to bring what open-access information there is to the attention of industry, government, regulators and researchers so that they are as well-informed as possible. The UKCCSRC has also worked with the National Audit Office to identify the value of knowledge transfer from publicly-supported projects and to establish standards for effective KT - https://ukccsrc.ac.uk/ukccsrc-workshop-lessons-amine-post-combustion-projects-sept-2024/. This is obviously an area where the UKCCSRC can continue to add significant value going forward. Significant impact within academia Through the expansion of its academic membership and flexible funding grants to a number of researchers new to the field the UKCCSRC has brought many new people, with new ideas, into the field. As UK CCS deployment opens up a ''Pasteur's Quadrant' (scientific research projects that seek fundamental understanding of scientific problems) for academic research the UKCCSRC has communicated arising research needs that are being taken up by the community, supported by UKCCSRC flexible funding. These include: CO2 capture - environmental performance with respect to non-CO2 emissions, ultra-high CO2 capture rates CO2 storage - understanding leakage and CO2 dispersion in UK formations, effective monitoring, maximising storage capacity CO2 removal from the air - improvements to biomass energy with CCS (BECCS) and Direct Air Capture (DAC) technologies Societal benefits of CCS - analysis to aid timely CCS project delivery while meeting wider net zero and just transition commitments

Results and Impact As an invited speaker, I delivered a talk titled "Why We Need to Do CCS" at Jilin University to an audience of 25 faculty members and students from the School of Architectural Engineering, on 27th December 2024. The purpose was to introduce fundamental concepts of carbon capture and its role in mitigating climate change,
particularly to an audience outside the field. I designed and delivered the talk, tailoring it to a non-specialist audience by using case studies and practical examples to explain the urgency of CCS deployment. Following the talk, I visited their research institution to discuss possible interdisciplinary research opportunities. Presentation slides and a summary document were provided to attendees. The talk was briefly covered in the university's internal newsletter, increasing its reach beyond the attendees. The talk sparked discussions on integrating carbon capture considerations into sustainable architectural design. Two faculty members expressed interest in interdisciplinary collaboration on carbon-related building materials. Some students reported a greater awareness of climate mitigation technologies, potentially influencing future career choices.

Results and Impact I attended a three-day Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) workshop at the University of Surrey, organised by EBNet and led by Professor Jhuma Sadhukhan, alongside another Senior Research Fellow (Dr Lee Stevens) from the University of Nottingham. The workshop, attended by 30 early-career researchers and academics, aimed to
provide LCA training and facilitate discussions on integrating LCA into research projects. As a participant and EBNet member, I engaged in training sessions, actively contributed to discussions, and shared my expertise on carbon capture and storage (CCS) in combination with LCA methodologies. This
allowed for valuable knowledge exchange on how LCA can be applied to carbon sequestration and environmental impact assessments.
Training materials, including LCA software tutorials and case study documents, were provided to attendees.
The event was widely promoted on social media-LinkedIn and was also featured in the EBNet newsletter, helping to increase awareness and engagement within the research community. This workshop expanded my professional network with researchers working on sustainability and environmental impact assessments. Facilitated knowledge exchange, encouraging discussions on applying LCA to low-carbon technology development. Increased visibility of my research, leading to follow-up discussions on potential joint projects and publications.

Results and Impact This seminar, attended by approximately 15 industry professionals and researchers at SLB, focused on bridging the gap between fossil fuel energy development and low-carbon technologies. My presentation highlighted advancements in carbon capture and sequestration (CCS), aiming to foster industry-academic collaboration and facilitate knowledge exchange. I presented key research findings on silica-PEI solid adsorbents for CO2 capture in post-combustion capture (PCC) and direct air capture (DAC). SLB researchers also shared their work on carbon capture rig design, which closely aligned with my research, making our work complementary. Our study on the impact of moisture on DAC performance attracted significant attention from the group, as they found the insights particularly promising. This led to engaging discussions on potential collaboration opportunities. Several attendees expressed increased interest in carbon capture technologies, indicating a growing awareness and industry shift toward low-carbon solutions.
