EnergyREV Impact Acceleration Funding Application

Lead Research Organisation: University of Strathclyde
Department Name: Politics

Abstract

Since work began in the Government funded Prospering from the Energy Revolution (PFER) programme a significant number of outputs and insights have been produced by the EnergyREV research consortium, the Energy Systems Catapult, and the wider design and demonstration projects. However, there is a growing need and opportunity for the PFER programme to further integrate and coordinate its key outputs and learnings to deliver the impactful evidence required by government decision makers, and wider stakeholders, to accelerate the uptake and impact of smart local energy systems. What has become increasingly requested through conversations with the PFER Programme Board, the PFER Challenge Advisory Group (CAG), the EnergyREV Strategic Steering Group (SSG), and with wider government and industry stakeholders, is a need to draw together the key learnings emerging from across the PFER programme in a way that drives impact across the policy, industry, and finance communities.

This additional proposal of work builds on the existing EnergyREV research programme in two ways. Firstly, by bringing insights and evidence generated through the existing programme of activities together with work undertaken in other parts of the PFER programme to co-create new and more impactful insights, which can support the PFER programme and challenge director in targeting messages to key stakeholders. Secondly, the funding will help accelerate the impact of specific pieces of research undertaken with the programme by working with key stakeholders in the development or implementation of new products, practices, processes or policies that align with the wider aims of the PFER programme.

Description This funding is an Impact Acceleration extension of the main EnergyREV grant, reference number EP/S031863/1, funded via the Prospering from the Energy Revolution (PFER) Programme.

The aim for this additional work is to add value to the main EnergyREV programme through:
1. Engaging the wider PFER community in the co-creation of insights that address high level cross cutting themes, drawing on knowledge and evidence
already generated within the diverse consortia (including EnergyREV, ERIS, demonstrator projects, design projects) that make up the PFER programme.
2. Accelerating the impact of research undertaken within the EnergyREV programme such that it can help meet the wider PFER objectives.

At the date of submission, this additional funding has delivered three workshops - listed in the engagement section, thus achieving objective 1 of supporting the co-creation of insights across the PFER community. Insights from these workshops are now being drafted into a policy brief, which will be circulated during a meeting with the EnergyREV Policy Contact Group, and subsequently published on the EnergyREV website.

The second objective is underway, with three EnergyREV Impact Projects funded. These are not due to end until the end of March, hence the impact has yet to be achieved and will be reported in subsequent reporting periods.
Exploitation Route The policy briefs that will be produced will support key insights being taken forward by relevant policy makers.
Wider outcomes related to the research are reported under the main grant, ref EP/S031863/1
