EPSRC Core Equipment 2022

Lead Research Organisation: University of Glasgow
Department Name: College of Science and Engineering

Abstract

The proposal requests two items of equipment to benefit users across the College of Science and Engineering.

i) An Ultrafast Cryo-nano Microscope for quantum measurements to be located within the School of Chemistry. This system will allow nanoscale, time-resolved measurement of light in materials that exhibit quantum behaviours.
ii) A Compact UV Laser System for rapid PCB prototyping to be located in the James Watt School of Engineering. This system will offer user-friendly, contact-free rapid prototyping for a wide range of materials and remove the need to use commercial services, or multi-stage cleanroom processes.

This equipment will expand our current capabilities in the areas of quantum measurement and materials processing, which underpin a large portfolio of research in fields including materials science and engineering, quantum technologies, healthcare technologies, communications and sensing. The new facilities will be used by researchers across the College with significant demand in the Schools of Chemistry, Engineering and Physics & Astronomy. As well as underpinning existing research, the equipment will enable new research and initiate new collaborations. They will support multiple EPSRC Programme and Standard research grants, CDTs and QuantIC, the UK Quantum Imaging Hub.
