CORNERSTONE Photonics Innovation Centre (C-PIC)
Lead Research Organisation:
University of Southampton
Department Name: Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC)
Abstract
However, access to silicon prototyping facilities remains a challenge in the UK due to the high cost of both equipment and the cleanroom facilities that are required to house the equipment. Furthermore, there is often a disconnect in communication between industry and academia, resulting in some industrial challenges remaining unsolved, and support, training, and networking opportunities for academics to engage with commercialisation activities isn't widespread.
The C-PIC host institutions comprising University of Southampton, University of Glasgow and the Science and Technologies Facilities Council (STFC), together with 105 partners at proposal stage, will overcome these challenges by uniting leading UK entrepreneurs and researchers, together with a network of support to streamline the route to commercialisation, translating a wide range of technologies from research labs into industry, underpinned by the C-PIC silicon photonics prototyping foundry. Applications will cover data centre communications; sensing for healthcare, the environment & defence; quantum technologies; artificial intelligence; LiDAR; and more.
We will deliver our vision by fulfilling these objectives:
Translate a wide range of silicon photonics technologies from research labs into industry, supporting the creation of new companies & jobs, and subsequently social & economic impact.
Interconnect the UK silicon photonics ecosystem, acting as the front door to UK expertise, including by launching an online Knowledge Hub.
Fund a broad range of Innovation projects supporting industrial-academic collaborations aimed at solving real world industry problems, with the overarching goal of demonstrating high potential solutions in a variety of application areas.
Embed equality, diversity, and inclusion best practice into everything we do.
Deliver the world's only open source, fully flexible silicon photonics prototyping foundry based on industry-like technology, facilitating straightforward scale-up to commercial viability.
Support entrepreneurs in their journey to commercialisation by facilitating networks with venture capitalists, mentors, training, and recruitment.
Represent the interests of the community at large with policy makers and the public, becoming an internationally renowned Centre able to secure overseas investment and international partners.
Act as a convening body for the field in the UK, becoming a hub of skills, knowledge, and networking opportunities, with regular events aimed at ensuring possibilities for advancing the field and delivering impact are fully exploited.
Increase the number of skilled staff working in impact generating roles in the field of silicon photonics via a range of training events and company growth, whilst routinely seeking additional funding to expand training offerings.

| Results and Impact | On November 9th, 2024, Emily Crawshaw, a Research Technician at CORNERSTONE, captivated families and individuals at the University of Southampton's Arts and Humanities Festival. Held in the vibrant Southampton Cultural Quarter, Emily participated in the 'Play with Light' activity day organised by the Optics and Photonics Society (OpSoc). During the festival, Emily assisted PhD and master's students in engaging the public with CORNERSTONE's research. She showcased a silicon wafer, explaining step-by-step the typical fabrication process. This information was made accessible for a range of ages and abilities, ranging from young children to adults with a scientific background. This hands-on demonstration introduced visitors to the fascinating world of silicon photonics without revealing proprietary information. Throughout the day she also assisted in explaining other scientific concepts, this included making kaleidoscopes and enhancing peoples understanding of fibre optics and reflection. |

| Results and Impact | Singapore Semiconductor Industry Association (SSIA) Annual Summit on 18 September was another significant part of the week's events. With the theme "Synergizing Silicon: Pioneering the Future with AI and Quantum Technologies," the summit featured a range of expert speakers and special guests. Professor Reed joined other experts in exploring the convergence of AI, quantum computing, and semiconductor technologies. The summit began with an opening address by SSIA Executive Director Ang Wee Seng, followed by a keynote speech from UK Minister for the Indo-Pacific, Catherine West. In her address, Catherine West emphasised the UK government's commitment to advancing semiconductor research, especially in areas such as AI, quantum technologies, and silicon photonics. "With the world's semiconductor chip market expected to double in size within the next 10 years, the UK would be foolish not to be investing in this area. And that is why we are working to boost our strengths in everything from chip design and new material semiconductors, to silicon photonics and advanced packaging" she said. West also highlighted how this technology has the potential to revolutionise medicine, mitigate climate crisis and even defend our democracies against cyber-attack. |

| Results and Impact | A lantern making workshop, run by Pearl John, Nikita Lack (ORC PG), and David Adeyemo (P&A UG), funded by Cornerstone C-PiC and supported by Light Up Trails, ran on 24th October 2024 at the University of Southampton. The event was organised by Into University who brought Year 8 students - of mixed abilities - from Oasis Academy Lord's Hill School to the university for enrichment activities. The workshop introduced pupils to Photonics and aimed to spark pupils' interest in continuing to study Physics. The workshop met its objectives and learning outcomes: students' awareness of photonics increased by 55%; 82% of the students were able to define Photonics as relating to either the science or technology of light; and 64% of pupils were able to give either 2 (46%) or 3 (18%) examples of applications of photonics (although there was some confusion as to the difference between science - and technology as there were several responses giving examples of the electromagnetic spectrum rather than a technological application. The workshop was enjoyed by participants, with 9/11 (81%) giving an enjoyment rating of 4/5 and higher. In answer to the question on what they found the most interesting aspect of the workshop, pupils answered applications including lasers, waveguides and optical communication. Responses to the question on whether they would like to learn more about photonics were mixed, with 91% saying 'yes' (36%) or 'unsure' (55%) - and only 9% 'no'. This may imply that while the workshop piqued curiosity for some, others may need more engaging or relatable content to build sustained interest. Students also may not have understood that they would learn more about photonics through studying physics. Verbal feedback from organisers confirmed that making lanterns/ having a hands-on-activity was much appreciated by the students, teacher and student ambassadors. |

| Results and Impact | In the month of November, CORNERSTONE welcomed participants from diverse industries to its three-day PhotonHub Experience Centre course: Silicon Photonics - Build Your Own Thermo-Optic Modulator. Hosted at the University of Southampton, this immersive event introduced both beginners and experienced professionals to the intricate world of silicon photonics fabrication. Designed to teach the principles of silicon photonics while offering hands-on experience, the course proved to be a transformative journey for all attendees. "Walking into the cleanroom and working on these processes myself was incredible," said Qi Tang, one of the attendees. "The CORNERSTONE team was so open and supportive, answering every question in detail and guiding us through tutorials. Seeing the tools in action and understanding the tolerances involved has given me a new perspective on how photonics devices are brought to life." "I found the experience incredibly valuable," shared James Banyard, another participant. "Seeing the process up close and step-by-step really reinforced the fabrication concepts that were presented. Talking with the experienced technicians and engineers added depth and insight that you just can't get from online resources." "The fabrication support CORNERSTONE offers is truly powerful and invaluable," Qi Tang reflected. "I can already see how what I've learned here will help bring my photonics ideas into production." The highlight of the course? Each participant left with their own fabricated silicon photonics chip-a tangible reminder of what they'd accomplished. |
