Abstract
The proposal is for funding to establish a high performance computing centre to be shared by the N8 Research Partnership - a consortium of the research-intensive universities in the North of England (Durham, Lancaster, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield and York). The aim is to underpin world class research in science and engineering, which increasingly makes use of large scale modelling, simulation and scale data analysis, alongside theory and experiment. The new facility will be cost effective, because it will be shared by 8 universities rather than each of the universities having a similar facility, and it will enable much more complex simulations and analyses to be run routinely than is currently possible. As well as underpinning world class research, the facility will be of great interest to industry, and is likely to lead to new research and innovation collaborations between the universities and business.
Planned Impact
The proposed Centre will provide an opportunity for businesses, particularly SMEs, to access HPC facilities of a scale not easily available without significant investment, creating major potential for new research collaboration and knowledge exchange with the research-intensive universities of N8. We will use several mechanisms to enhance the potential impact of the Centre:
1. Engaging with the local economies of the North of England through strategic alignment with Local Enterprise Partnerships and other agencies;
2. Actively developing new collaborations, particularly through the TSB-funded N8 Industry Innovation Forum;
3. Lowering the barriers to engagement by providing HPC advice, training and free 'taster' access.

Description | This award, together with EP/K000209/1 funded the creation of a centre of excellence in high performance computing for the N8 Universities, N8-HPC, with a significant computer cluster and support services. The centre is still fully active, and has developed communities of practice in key research areas. Projects cover a range of disciplines including Chemistry, Maths, Engineering, Life Sciences, Earth Sciences, Physical Sciences and ICT. The scientific impact of N8-HPC has been significant, with the facility featuring in 84 grant applications totalling £59.8m and its use acknowledged in 377 published papers and 9 REF Environment Templates. |
Exploitation Route | This varies from project to project and is the responsibility of individual investigators. We have, however, worked actively with the business engagement services of the N8 universities to facilitate collaboration with industry and identify opportunities for knowledge transfer. |
Sectors | Aerospace, Defence and Marine,Chemicals,Electronics,Energy,Environment,Healthcare,Manufacturing, including Industrial Biotechology,Pharmaceuticals and Medical Biotechnology |
