Mechanisms of atmospheric pressure plasma treatment of BOPP
in Plasma Processes and Polymers
Description | Preliminary data have shown that contact angle can be modified by exposure to an atmospheric pressure plasma discharge. To date, the work has been conducted on polypropylene with nitrogen, but other process gases will be used next. We have now tried nitrogen with admixtures of C2H2, N2O and CO2. Interestingly, these admixtures did not have a measurable effect on contact angle. Ink adhesion tests demonstrated that treatment with N2 significantly improved adhesion of solvent based inks to polypropylene, but did not improve adhesion of UV cured inks. |
Exploitation Route | We hope to use the techniques to treat new types of recyclable and compostible biopolymers |
