Description - We have found how interaction mechanics is considered by interacting humans doing a joint task, and how this influences their communication through touch and force (Takagi et al. 2017 Nature Human Behaviour). Furthermore, we have shown that humans can voluntarily control the strength of their physical interaction in order to optimise haptic communication (Takagi et al. 2018 PLoS Computational Biology). We also demonstrated that the benefits of haptic communication scale with the group of the collective such as e.g. to carry a table together (Takagi et al. 2019 eLife).
- The work in MOTION gave rise this year 2020 to publications related to haptic sensing with the environment and between humans, namely (Ivanova et al. 2020, IEEE OJEMB),
(Dall'Orso et al. 2020 Cerebral Cortex), (Takagi et al. 2020 Scientific reports)
Exploitation Route - The results on human behaviour have been modeled using game theory (Li 2019 Nature Machine Intelligence), which in will in turn help the development of collaborative robots working in contact with humans such as for physical rehabilitation or shared driving in automatic cars.
- The results on motor interaction have given rise to reproduction of the experiments and confirmation of the results, see (Beckers et al. 2020 Scientific Reports)

Description The parent grant with coordinator Nanayakkara, Thrishantha is described there. The main finding from our subproject to the MOTION grant is that mechanically interacting partners adapt their muscle co-contraction to improve exchange of multi sensory information between them. This has now led to a method for robots in contact with humans to adapt their control gain to this user within the EU project PH-CODING, which was shown to improve the behaviour of both the robot and its human user.
