Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description An accurate computational model is developed and thoroughly validated. Using the developed model, we discovered different flow regimes based upon a systematic numerical study. We have also explored systematically various liquid-solid flow behaviour including with the consideration of thermal effects, and discovered interesting liquid-solid flow behaviours and documented in our recent publications.
Exploitation Route The model can be used by researchers working on liquid-solid flows. the developed regime map and the approach taken to construct the regime map can be of practical use to engineers and researchers.
Sectors Chemicals,Manufacturing, including Industrial Biotechology

Description Discrete element modelling (DEM) capabilities were significantly enhanced, which enables rigorous analysis of wet particle systems and robust simulations of full-scale twin screw granulators. The enhanced computational capabilities promote the up-take of this modelling technique in the pharmaceutical and food industry from which we have received direct industrial funding to explore the use of this technique in pharmaceutical manufacturing from Genentech and Janssen, as well as chocolate manufacturing from Mondelez. In addition, the enhanced computational capabilities also led to successful funding from EPSRC (e.g. EP/W027461) and EU H2020 (No. 813212) with a total budget over £5m.
