Description | Collaborators at Manchester using electron microscopy imaging have shown that the RPV steel manufactured using the HIPed processing route have a very different microstructure in comparison to the forged materials. In particular in the HIPed samples there are large ferrite grains not conventionally seen in these bainitic steels. It offers the opportunity to investigate the effects of irradiation (neutron, ion, proton) on ferrite and bainite in the same sample. We have shown that it is possible |
Exploitation Route | Of particular relevance is the chain of characterisation techniques developed to enable holistic analyses of nuclear material by UK academics and industry. Irraidated materials were succesfully received, stored and prepared from overseas by the UKAEA MRF, then transferred to Oxford, Manchester and Imperial for complementary/correlative analyses. The response of HIP materials to irradiation was shown to be similar to traditionally forged materials, open this manufacturing route for further inv |

Results and Impact | The Virtual Atom Probe Tomography and Microsocpy Conference is the most prestigious international conference dedicated to materials research underpinned by APT. More than 200 researchers from around the worls attended this 3-day event which was held via Zoom and streamed on Youtube. The event raised the profile of the new atom probe facility within this research community. As part of the conference delegates, in paerticular students, were encouraged to pre-record 5 minute mini-presentations to highlight their research which we then posted on youtube. We received 44 submissions which have been collectively received over 4,300 views.https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-0gZJOh94SfNCVFaZm6WNGLc2BDkvRex |
