UNIVERSITY OF EXETER
Department Name: Business and Management
Abstract
It is now widely accepted that we are living through a 4th industrial revolution and that innovation driven by digital technologies such as the Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Quantum Computing, 5G mobile networks, the Internet-of-Things (IoT), blockchain cryptography, sensory devices, wearables, and decentralised data flows. etc is fundamentally changing the economy, society and individual lives. The mission of DIGIT is to accelerate the responsible application of digital technology on productivity and employee wellbeing. We will do this specifically in Large Organisations the 'big name firms' in the public and private sectors who employ more than 250 employees.
Attention diverted to start-ups and a highlighting of successes by "unicorns" has obscured the fact that LEOs continue to drive the UK economy, employing 57% UK workforce and sustaining communities throughout the UK. The 2018 Gartner report found 11 out of 15 organisations identified digital transformation as one of their top three organisation priorities for 2018 and the top priority for banking and investment, telecoms and government sectors. Similarly, 71% of UK business leaders admitted that digital transformation is not as widespread as it should be. A survey of 4600 business leaders by Dell found that the UK lags companies from India, Brazil and Thailand in digital transformation. Although traditional consulting remedies have application in the analog world, digital technologies are revolutionising what is possible, and far more creativity is urgently required, DIGIT is designed to meet this need.
As a Centre of Excellence in digital innovation, DIGIT will provide its partners with an opportunity to trial 4th industrial revolution technologies and business models that aim to bring together the four areas of wealth creation that are at the heart of our proposal: business growth, productivity, wellbeing and the environment. We will provide our business partners with these opportunities in two phases. In Phase 1, participating firms who are already exploring '4th tech' can expect to access partner facilities, designed specifically to help expand and explore new dimensions to this testing, including wellbeing, productivity and sustainability in a low-risk environment. In Phase 2, DIGIT partners will be provided with access to a demonstrator, opportunities for testing in-the-wild and a programme of evaluative action research, which aims to ensure that subsequent processes of adoption are effective and responsible.

Planned Impact
DIGIT's vision is to create a world-leading interdisciplinary centre for research into the responsible application of digital technology, on productivity and employee wellbeing through the development not only of the technology but the development of new skills, organisational design and practices, new business models and value chains. Our application will be in Large Established Organisations (LEOs).
LEOs are the backbone of the UK economy, employing more than half of its workforce and sustaining economies and communities throughout the UK. They face extraordinary pressures to redesign their structures and business models, and this along with the slow diffusion and adoption of innovation and technology is a significant blockage to improving UK productivity and overall economic performance. DIGIT combines digital innovation, growth and transformation with productivity enhancement and employee wellbeing to ensure optimal performance and sustainability for the organisation and its people.
DIGIT has a wide variety of impacts on both individuals and the institution. LEOs seek insights, approaches, and support in understanding, prioritizing, and acting on these disruptions, at the same time as meeting sustainability and resource usage commitments. Economic Impact will be achieved through successful co-creation and use by our partner companies of the demonstrator and the application of associated learning in their organisations.
During periods of change employees often experience significant uncertainty and the changing digital workplace can be a very stressful place leading to lower performance and reduced wellbeing all round. There were 600,000 cases of work-related stress, anxiety or depression reported in 2017/18 ad 57% of all working days lost to ill health were due to stress and anxiety. By including employee wellbeing as a twin theme to be addressed alongside productivity, we will ensure that new digital and organisational working practices enhance rather than impact wellbeing.
Research outputs will be shared and promulgated through our team's associated existing DE and EPSRC Research Community Networks. For example, G Parr is a Co-Pi on EPSRC Commnet2 (https://www.commnet.ac.uk/); G Parr and R Maull are CI on the EPSRC DE Network- Internet of Food Things which has large food organisations as members:- (https://www.foodchain.ac.uk/); R Maull (PI) and P.Godsiff (network co-ordinator) are members of the EPSRC Network plus, DEAS (Digitally enhanced advanced services) (https://www.deas.ac.uk/). This will benefit academic communities within the Digital Economy and is complementary to the expected publication of research papers and outputs covered in detail in the academic beneficiaries' section. Throughout the funding period, the DIGIT team will work with our partners to identify opportunities to fund additional activities in priority areas (e.g., through KTPs and EPSRC studentships, MSc and PhD programmes), contributing to the sustainability of the programme. For the wider research and practitioner community we will create a cadre of Impact Fellows. There are two types of fellows, those engaged in LEOs on digital application cases, and academics both nationally and internationally engaged in digital transformation research. These individuals will have the opportunity to undertake impact residencies, spending extensive periods of time based in DIGIT research institutions.

Impact | The PAC today reports concerns on the number of complex, large-scale digital programmes that "we continue to see fail" with serious impact on "important government services and taxpayers' money". Failures in NHS England's efforts to transform primary care services potentially put patients at risk of serious harm and the Committee recently reported on the Home Office's programme to replace the police national computer: delayed by at least five years and more than £400 million over budget so far, spurring senior Police to declare a loss of confidence in the Home Office. |

PI Contribution | The recent rapid development in new era of 'Internet of things (IoT) plus artificial intelligence (AI)', particularly the fusion of new AI technologies with new-generation sensor technologies, can enable the game-changing transformation of models, manufacturing approaches and its ecosystems in terms of their applications in smart manufacturing, farming, and health industry. Key challenges relate to performance, scalability, energy efficiency, cyber resilience and financial cost of deployment and subsequent monitoring and management. Designing such systems can provide for more efficient decision making that has a direct positive impact on business efficiency and customer satisfaction. Rolling such an approach across a range of industries can generate a significant impact on the productivity of the organisation, national economy, people's livelihoods and potentially national security. The AIoT platform is thus the key technology to perform fundamental tasks to enable AI in the intelligent manufacturing industry. However, the development of AIoT applications is hard to popularize as it requires skills with specific background in both AI and IoT which may not be available in small and medium-sized companies. They have to invest extra labour costs to develop the skills set to build up an AIoT system to enhance their productivity. A highly integrated data decentralized AIoT platform is proposed to overcome the various challenges: with advantages of data fusion algorithms, sensor technology and architecture models, the new platform can offer improved efficiency of AIoT application development, flexibility, and adaptability in the intelligent manufacturing industry. |

A number of the DIGIT Lab team both Professors and ECRs (Prof Leroy White; Prof Saeema Ahmed-Kristensen; Dimitrios Batolas; Nikolai Kazantsev; Zena Wood, Phil Godsiff) attended the event in person to present papers or in their role as organisers (Phil Godsiff and Zena Wood) or as Chairs (Roger Maull- Co-Chari of scientific committee) or keynote speakers (Saeema Ahmed-Kristensen). The conference ran over 3 days and as such enabled great networking, providing opportunities for academics and practitioners to share the latest research and practice on topics related to the research themes of Resilience, Sustainability, Responsibility, and Identity. Participants were able to present in a friendly environment where emphasis was on discussion and development of the work presented. There were awards for best developmental paper (for ECRs and PhD students). DIGIT Lab's ECR, Nikolai Kazantsev won the award for developmental paper- 'Data Sharing Club: between the marketplace and the aggregator'. In November 2022, all publications from the CADE were made available online. Some of these feature DIGIT lab members: - Batolas, D., White, L. (2022) Technostress and attitudes towards digital transformation - Wood, Z., Godsiff, P., Fletcher, S. (2022) Servitization: insights from applied ontology Prof Saeema Ahmed-Kristensen's key note highlighted three areas of research: 1)complexity in systems, and the need to combine engineering knowledge with an understanding of how engineering designer and service engineers need to access information. 2) representing service knowledge, for products with long life cycles (e.g. oil rigs and aero engines) understanding how they behave once in service and how this knowledge can be used to enhance the next generation of designs. 3) representing user knowledge within computation systems; how can we use HCI theories and combine to develop novel data-driven approaches to generate design that create better experiences. Discussion created - As we move through Industry 4.0, we are moving away from knowledge in documents or that which resides in the heads of experts, to data from sensors. In order to make use of such data, we need to understand the context and how to transform to knowledge- thus the human in the loop is imperative. Engagement with, and appetite for, deeper knowledge of digital, that includes bringing together cognition, computational research and deep domain of the knowledge. Follow on activity- The authors from CADE 2022 have been invited to submit to the special issue on "Resilience, Sustainability, and Identity in the Digital Age" in Strategic Change: Briefing in Entrepreneurial Finance. One of DIGIT Lab's ECRs Dimitrios Batolas who presented their paper written with Co-I Leroy White titled 'Technostress and attitudes towards digital transformation' went on to write a blog from the event https://digit.ac.uk/technostress-holds-back-digital-transformation-can-growth-mindset-fix-this/. Prof Saeema Ahmed-Kristensen also wrote a blog https://digit.ac.uk/design-and-manufacturing-digital-technologies-and-the-human-in-the-loop/. Dr Nikolai Kazantsev has published two conference papers entitled The value of trust in the digital economy: The role of data sharing clubs ( DOI: 10.1049/icp.2022.2055) and Semantic data innovation hubs: answer as a service (DOI: 10.1049/icp.2022.2056) |

Results and Impact | "Summary: A 2 hour event at a cinema on Jersey from 8am-10am on 15th February. The agenda has mostly been defined and there is about a 20 minute slot for us to talk about the event last year and digital transformation directions. Originally Tony wanted this to be a panel discussion with 3 or 4 people from Jersey. But given the time we will do this via some recordings. And a very short live intro and summary comments. So Tony has lined up 4 short online interviews on Thursday and Friday this week via zoom. These will be recorded and then edited down (by them) to a 10 minute video that will be shown during our slot. I will carry out these interviews based on the attached script. Can you take a look and see if you have any adjustments? These are intended as short reviews. In terms of the event, I will go across for the event on 15th February. We can try to arrange some other activities during the visit, but I don't think there will be a lot of opportunity to get very far on this. (Tony is just recovering from covid so nothing has been set up). Given that, and other pressures of work, half-term, etc..is it better I handle this? You are welcome to join this visit, but I don't want to waste your time. " |

Results and Impact | If the digital revolution has well and truly arrived, why are some organisations still living in the past? Perhaps it is due to the fear of what a digital transformation might imply, but for many organisations there are established customers and workers that may resent these changes, but, in reality, the adoption of digital technologies for most, will be slow and steady at first, and slowly accelerate. However, organisations should be prepared for abrupt change rates and build skills in their members to be able to adapt and strive. |
