Horizon: Trusted Data-Driven Products

Lead Research Organisation: University of Nottingham
Department Name: Horizon Digital Economy Research

Abstract

The Horizon institute is a multidisciplinary centre of excellence for Digital Economy (DE) research. The core mission of Horizon has been to balance the opportunities arising from the capture, analysis and use of personal data with an awareness and understanding of human and social values. The focus on personal data in a wide range of contexts has required the development of a broad set of multidisciplinary competencies allowing us to build links from foundational algorithms and system to issues of society and policy. We follow a user-centred approach, undertaking research in the wild based on principles of open innovation.

Horizon now encompasses over 50 researchers, spanning Computing, Engineering, Law, Psychology, Social Sciences, Business and the Humanities. It has grown a diverse network of over 200 external partners who are involved in ongoing collaborative research and impact with Horizon, ranging from major international corporations to SMEs, from a wide variety of sectors, alongside government and civil society groups. We have also established a CDT in the third wave of funding that will eventually deliver 150 PhDs. Our critical mass of researchers, partners, students and funding has already led to over 800 peer-reviewed publications, composed of: 277 journal articles, 51 books and book chapters, and 424 conference papers, in a total of 15 different disciplines.

Over the years Horizon's focus has evolved from an emphasis on the collection and understanding of personal data to consider the user-centred design and development of data-driven products. This proposal builds on our established interdisciplinary competencies to deliver research and impact to ensure that future data-driven products can be both co-created and trusted by consumers.

Core to our current vision is the idea that future products will be hybrids of both the digital and the physical. Physical products are increasingly augmented with digital capabilities, from data footprints that capture their provenance to software that enables them to adapt their behaviour. Conversely, digital products are ultimately physically experienced by people in some real-world context and increasingly adapt to both. This real-world context is social; hence the data is social and often implicates groups, not just individuals. We foresee that this blending of physical and digital will drive the merging of traditional goods, services and experiences into new forms of product. We also foresee that - just as today's social media services are co-created by consumers who provide content and data - so will be these new data-driven products. At the same time, we are also witnessing a crisis of trust concerning the commercial use of personal data that threatens to undermine this vision of data-driven products. Hence, it is vitally important to build trust with consumers and operate within an increasingly complex regulatory environment from the earliest stages of innovating future products.

Our user-centred approach involves external partners and the public in "research-in-the-wild", grounding our fundamental research in real world challenges. Our delivery programme combines a bottom-up approach in which researchers are given the opportunity (and provided with the skills) to follow new impact opportunities in collaboration with partners as they arise (our Agile programme), with a top-down approach that strategically coordinates how these activities are targeted at wider communities (our Campaigns programme, with successive focus on Consumables, Co-production and Welfare), and reflective processes that allow us to draw out broader conclusions for the widest possible impact (our Cross-Cutting programme).

Throughout we aim to continue to develop the capacity in our researchers, the wider DE research community and more broadly within society, to engage in responsible innovation using personal data within the Digital Economy.

Planned Impact

This primary focus of our proposal is on delivering impact across the maturing Digital Economy, currently entering a crisis of trust in commercial personal data use. We target business, third sector organisations and public bodies from a diverse range of sectors including creative industries, retail, consumer goods, finance, energy, transportation and healthcare, as well as the ICT companies who are delivering the enabling technologies. These will benefit in multiple ways, including:

- Understanding how to better interpret complex and ambiguous human social data, in an increasingly regulated environment;
- Understanding how to embed such interpretations into personally meaningfully products that meet wider objectives of fulfilment, wellbeing and sustainability;
- Knowing how to do this responsibly and legally so as to build trust with consumers, customers and citizens;
- Being able to envision and demonstrate future data-driven products that blend the physical and digital that will drive the merging of traditional goods, services and experiences into new forms of product;
- Learning about the opportunities and challenges raised by such products through public deployments and field trials;
- Expanding the capabilities of the staff through exposure to new concepts, technologies and methods emerging from DE research;
- Gaining access to talented young people (especially CDT students) through internships and Agile projects with the potential to recruit them downstream;
- Entering a neutral environment in which they can engage with other partners at different points along the value chain for future data-driven products enabling cross- sectoral learning.

A distinctive focus of this iteration of Horizon is delivering policy impact. The government increasingly needs to provide leadership in the regulation of the digital. A crucial feature of this is the development of policies and a regulatory framework that ensure that products can be trusted in their use of personal data; prevent online harms; and secure the infrastructure to prevent it becoming a springboard for cyberattacks. Horizon will engage government departments and agencies (e.g. DCMS, DHSC, ICO, NCSC) and work closely with policy makers to tightly integrate understandings of technology and policy in a fast moving domain with a diverse set of stakeholders including platform providers, companies delivering digital products, regulators, civil interest and consumer groups. As part of this work we will provide policy makers with:
- creative tools to directly engage diverse stakeholders in co-creating future policy environments
- policy toolkits for stakeholders subject to these policies to help design products that are demonstrably compliant with these environments
- insights into the practical challenges and opportunities around realising the Secure by Design framework of IoT security currently being developed by DCMS .

Our proposal will ultimately have societal impact through the new kinds of products that will be developed, which deliver greater value to consumers and directly promote consumer welfare, including mental health. Consumers stand to benefit in every aspect of their lives - work, home and play through:

- products that are personalised to their needs;
- products which provide accountable provenance;
- products designed for social use and that can be trusted;
- being recognised as the co-creators of these products;
- methods and tools that directly engage them in their design.

Our proposal sets out a wide-ranging programme of impact activities to deliver these benefits, including Agile translational projects, a strategically coordinated Campaign to maximize impact among clusters of partners; and supporting programmes to develop individuals and the wider Digital Economy community.

Impact The Future Machine has informed a number of uncertain moments within 4 different locations across the country. Horizon has supported events taking place in Nottingham and these have reported within the engagement activities section on this platform. One such event involved children from Year 6 at Mellers Primary School finally met the Future Machine in Christ Church Gardens. In their classroom they made light boxes with different words for the weather, using the words that the Future Machine uses to turn the live weather data it collects from the sensors at the back of the Future Machine into music. They also used their own words to describe the weather. The musicians Alex and Dave came to Nottingham (from London) to celebrate the blossoms and meet the school children, showing the children how the weather data controls the music. We talked about how the weather also effects when the trees blossom each year. The children made their own sounds and movement to represent the breeze that shook the pink and white blossoms petals from the trees, echoing the snow that had fallen the week before. Alex, Dave and the Future Machine played along. The children then split into groups to devise their messages for the future. Each of the 62 children took turns to meet Future Machine, turn the handle, receive a printed story about the world as it is now, and speak to the future. Later more people came to meet under the trees, that were covered in the light boxes the school children made last year with birds on them, along with the weather words these light boxes lit up the blossoms as the sun went down. Alex and Dave played the sounds of the weather, and traditional celebration songs from Alex's country - Burkina Faso - as we waited for sundown. The people who were there stood under the trees with hand generators that they turned to power the lights in the boxes and light up the tree. Future Machine played along, with the sounds of the weather, and witnessed the moment. People left messages for the future and listened to the messages from the past, including some of the messages left by the children earlier in the day. 60 children and 4 teachers met under the blossom trees 25 people attended the evening activity in person 75 messages for the future were recorded on the Future Machine 130 views on Facebo

Description This Next Stage DE centre shifts our focus from the collection and understanding of personal data to exploring how personal data can be used to co-create with users all manner of products for the digital economy that become more personalised and adaptive, and so deliver greater value to consumers and producers. Since Horizon was set up, we have seen a growing awareness of the economic importance of data and its link to future products, but also a growing crisis of trust in data handling. The challenge we now face is to ensure that data-driven products can be trusted by consumers.

To deliver our vision we cluster key projects into three successive campaigns each representing a different starting point for approaching future hybrid products: Co-production, Consumer Products and Welfare. The focus of the Co-Production campaign was on engaging consumers in the making and distribution of hybrid products. The creative and cultural industries provided a natural starting point as they are relatively advanced in their thinking about co-production and offer a safe and accessible testbed for engaging consumers in creative explorations. Our projects have explored novel ways in which consumers might co-create stories, film, festival content, and podcasts, from directly producing content to indirectly shaping experiences through their personal data. Our research has led to mechanisms to enable hybrid participation, group engagement and to give users greater control over trust in personalisation by processing user's personal data locally.

The Consumer Products campaign, which has just launched, is investigating the creative design of digitally enhanced consumer producst, exploring how technologies such as virtual and augmented reality can enhance the consumer experience. Much of the current IoT focus is on embedding intelligence into products, hence we must look instead at the technology innovations needed in the digital ecosystems surrounding this class of product and how the product identity and digital footprint can be conveyed using very low cost adaptations. This form of hybridity offers new opportunities to add value to products, to suggest new experience propositions to consumers, and to drive responsible consumption in a circular economy. Our final Welfare campaign will focus on enabling industry to create data-driven products that deliver positive impacts.
Exploitation Route A key part of our work to date has focused on supporting the Creative Industries in delivering impact into the digital economy. This became of paramount importance as the pandemic hit, resulting in catastrophic impact to our cultural fabric, local economies, and those who work in creative industries. In recognition of the continuing challenges for this sector our first campaign focused Co-Production, working with creative partners from broadcasting, film, theatre, festivals and storytelling to engage consumers in the making and distribution of hybrid experiences. We have also been working with independent artists who have created interactive installations and unique devices requiring the engagement of the general public and the use of their personal data, to address global challenges such as reducing carbon emissions and environmental change. We have just launched the Consumer Products campaign collaborating with industry partners to investigate the creative design of digitally enhanced consumer products, exploring how technologies such as virtual/augmented reality and domestic robots can enhance the consumer experience. Finally, our Welfare campaign will build on our growing collaboration with NIHR-funded MindTech and the BRC to establish a portfolio of projects explicitly aimed at establishing technology, methodologies and toolkits that actively promote personalised digital health and a consumer welfare agenda.

Description Economic Impact - while consumers are the ultimate beneficiaries, our design understandings around technologies and trust will be of use primarily to those seeking to innovate future hybrid products. Our three campaigns target impact at the food and consumer goods, creative and media, and health and wellbeing sectors as well as the IoT technology sector that underpins these. Creative and media: we support a creative pipeline in partnership with artists and designers, which have created tourable products such as Home:Zero (at Lakeside theatre, Strelley Library and Mansfield Museum), Richard Ramchurn's 'Before We Disappear' interactive film and hybrid festival events (Voxjam, University of Nottingham Diversity Festiva, and exhibition with the National Holocaust Centre and Museum), alongside platforms such as Bubbles and the 'Experience authoring and playback tool'. Food and consumer goods: We have established relationships with major FMCG companies who will be able to exploit our results from the Consumer Products campaign. Health and wellbeing: Horizon and our partner MindTech are part of the £22M NIHR-funded Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre that supports the translation of healthcare research into prototype products that are ready for clinical trials as well as licencing deals. Policy impact is a key focus for this iteration of Horizon and will arise from direct interaction with policy makers, including briefings in response to UK, EU, and international calls for evidence. Government and regulators need to establish a regulatory framework that ensures that products can trusted in their use of personal data; prevent online harms; and secure the infrastructure to prevent it becoming a springboard for cyberattacks on critical infrastructure. Horizon directly engages policymakers to make direct policy input in these areas (e.g. Submission to UK Government call for evidence - The right to privacy: digital data, DCMS Response To Call Connected Tech Smart Or Sinister, Submission to DCMS consultation - Audience protection standards on Video-on-Demand Services). Importantly, we also provide them with the creative tools they require to directly engage diverse stakeholders (IoT platform providers, companies delivering products on top of these, third sector organisations, regulators and also consumer groups) in (i) co-creating future policy environments and (ii) designing products that are demonstrably compliant with these environments. Social impact will arise from new kinds of products that deliver greater value to consumers. Consumers stand to benefit in every aspect of their lives - work, home and play. Our research emphasises products that directly promote consumer welfare, including mental health. Consumers will benefit from all manner of products that are personalised to their needs, provide accountable provenance, are designed for social use and can be trusted. They will also benefit from being recognised as the co-creators of these products and from methods and tools that directly engage them in their design. Each of our three campaigns includes significant public facing activity: staging events at festivals and touring cultural works to directly engage tens of thousands of people in the co-production campaign; releasing products in the Consumables Campaign; and participating in design workshops and feasibility studies in the Welfare Campaign.

Impact The framework directly supports stakeholder-specific improvement of quality-of-life through guiding environmental management. A key challenge of environmental management is the complexity of leveraging limited resources to deliver maximum utility for stakeholders. Traditional methods employ economics-driven measures, i.e. seek to optimise the state of the environment in respect to a monetary valuation of its properties (e.g. clean water, various species, etc.). The framework developed here uses novel ways to capture information directly from local stakeholders directly affected by the management of a the given catchment. These data, which are often complex and uncertain (e.g. discord between stakeholder groups) are integrated with environmental data to provide managers with a a clear and transparent, i.e. explainable-to-stakeholders set of recommendations on which management actions are expected to deliver the maximum increase in stakeholder quality of life, for the level of investment/resource available.

Title Moral-IT Cards
Description 'The Moral-IT Deck is a set of physical cards that pose questions to teams of designers about the technology they are creating. Drawing together human computer interaction, computer ethics and design perspectives, the cards present questions and concepts in four suits (ethical, legal, privacy and security). These raise awareness of ethics in design by questioning the values and practices being embedded into their systems. They are used with the Moral-IT Impact Assessment Board, which provides a streamlined process for a team to collaboratively discuss and map out emerging risks, likelihood of occurrence, appropriate safeguards and challenges of addressing these. This process results in a plan for the team that will support them in building a more ethical system.'

PI Contribution We worked closely on developing and implementing a comprehensive programme of both qualitative and quantitative empirical research to address the research questions of the project. The majority of experimental design, data collection, and analysis relating to work packages 1 and 2 were led by team members from Horizon.
Collaborator Contribution With a background in law and ethics, Jiahong provided expert input throughout the project in relation to ethical and RRI considerations. Key short-term inputs related to ethical development and implementation of the research programme (e.g., advising on study sampling and data handling practices, and writing ethics proposals). Longer-term inputs related to RRI considerations around the broader adoption and use of the proposed data capture method. This involved leading a third work package, focused on identifying, evaluating, and ultimately mitigating potential ethical risks. Jiahong also led submission of a reflective article to the Journal of Responsible Technology.
Impact This is a multi-disciplinary collaboration, involving researchers with a background in Computer Science, Psychology, Linguistics, Marketing, and Law. Several outputs from this collaboration are listed under the Horizon: Trusted Data-Driven Products award. Early outcomes include engagement with industry partners in three focus group/workshop sessions, and presentation of preliminary findings at the Association for Business Communication conference (2021). Several further publications arising from this research are either submitted or planned.

PI Contribution We have presented and visited the facilities at RACE in April 2022. This has successfully led to a direct research collaboration. We currently have a PhD student that was sponsored and co-supervised by RACE. The world leading robotic facility will be a fantastic testbed for the PhD student to test and apply their work in real life settings.
Collaborator Contribution The recent collaboration between with RACE has had a significant impact. Through the facility visit, the we gained valuable insights into the practical challenges that are faced in the field of nuclear robotics and teleoperation. The hands-on experience allowed for a deeper understanding of the challenges and provided a platform for exchanging information and ideas. This knowledge transfer was not only inspiring, but it also resulted in a mutual exchange of the latest research and advancements in the field. The benefits of this collaboration are two-fold. Firstly, it has allowed for a deeper understanding of the real-world challenges faced in nuclear robotics and teleoperation. This has opened up new avenues for research and development, leading to the potential for new solutions and innovations. Secondly, the knowledge transfer has facilitated cross-disciplinary collaboration, leading to a more comprehensive and well-rounded approach to tackling these challenges. Overall, this collaboration has demonstrated the importance of hands-on experiences, knowledge transfer, and cross-disciplinary collaboration in advancing the field of nuclear robotics and teleoperation.

Organisation Harare Institute of Technology
Country Zimbabwe
Sector Academic/University
PI Contribution Team members from the Horizon Everything in Moderation project have been awarded funding from an internal UoN GCRF call to run a sister project. This sister project explores similar themes to Everything in Moderation, focusing on the Zimbabwean context. Research and development (R&D) is key to the economic and social development of ODA recipient nations. We propose a project that facilitates R&D in Zimbabwe and builds capacity through knowledge exchange. The project extends a current research study that focuses on a topic of global relevance. End-to-End Encryption (E2E) is a system of communication in which only those sending and receiving messages can see their content. Within this system, a message is encrypted when it is sent and is decrypted only when it is received by the recipient. Examples of apps that use E2E are WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram. These apps are growing in use in the Global North but in some cases are already extremely popular in the Global South. For instance, WhatsApp is by far the most used app in Zimbabwe, accounting for 44% of mobile app use. It is popular due to its affordability and accessibility, and is often used to facilitate economic participation and civic engagement. Research shows that this pervasiveness of WhatsApp across Zimbabwe benefits users through opportunities for one-to-one and one-to-many communications, but that problematic behaviours also occur such as the spread of misleading information and inflammatory content. Such behaviours can be hard for online platforms and regulators to address due to the private nature of communications on the app. As E2E-enabled platforms grow in use across the globe, it is necessary for research to investigate dilemmas faced by Internet platforms and policy makers. How can the spread of fake news and inflammatory content be moderated in private digital spaces? What is an appropriate balance between privacy and security? These dilemmas are being investigated by the current Horizon project Everything in Moderation (EiM). We will extend this work by running Trends and Challenges for the moderation of end-to-end encrypted communication in Zimbabwe as a companion project to EiM. In this companion project we partner with experts at the Harare Institute of Technology (HIT). We will support our collaborating colleagues at HIT to conduct interviews with a broad cross-section of stakeholders to identify the different challenges and potential solutions surrounding the moderation of E2E-enabled platforms specific to the Zimbabwean context. Analysis will advance the research programme at HIT and benefit EiM by deepening and enriching our project findings. Complementary knowledge exchange activities will further the relationship between the two universities, establishing new research networks and building towards a future funding bid for a larger-scale project.
Collaborator Contribution The team at Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) will be lead by CoI Calvin Mugauri. The team will conduct a series of interviews in Zimbabwe and collaborate with UoN to analyse and write up the results.
Impact This is a multi-disciplinary project that will lead to knowledge exchange between HIT and UoN, also academic dissemination and professional development.

Title DECSYS major feature update (Prolific integration)
Description DECSYS - 'Discrete and Ellipse-based response Capture SYStem' - enables creation and administration of digital surveys that elicit both conventional and interval-valued responses (using an ellipse-based response format). This output relates to a substantial feature update to the software, permitting integration with the 'Prolific' online sampling service (cf. Palan & Schitter, 2018). This includes automatic direction of study participants from Prolific to DECSYS study sub-surveys (i.e., randomised condition allocation), recording of participants' pseudonymous Prolific IDs, as well as auto-redirection to Prolific with survey completion code for confirmation. This greatly facilitates online sampling at scale for interval-valued surveys, including for representative samples (using the Prolific automatic sample stratification tool). DECSYS incorporates a range of features, and is designed to maximise versatility for experimenters and usability for participants. Surveys can be conducted either locally or online, and results easily exported. The key component of DECSYS is that it provides a vehicle for efficient digital capture of interval-valued survey responses using an ellipse-based response mode. DECSYS takes advantage of the recent proliferation of touch-screen devices to do so in a fast, cohesive and intuitive manner. The ellipse response mode allows respondents to quickly and easily provide interval-valued responses, so as to indicate uncertainty, vagueness, or inherent range in their responses.

Results and Impact In June 2021, the Prime Minister announced the creation of a new National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), to "provide strategic direction on the use of science and technology as the tools to tackle great societal challenges, level up across the country and boost prosperity around the world." He also announced the creation of a new Office for Science and Technology Strategy (OSTS), to be based in the Cabinet Office, which would "drive forward the strategy of Whitehall's science and technology priorities from the centre". The OSTS would be headed up by a National Technology Adviser, and Sir Patrick Vallance was appointed as the first person in that role.

In this event, we discussed the setting up of the NSTC and OSTS, and their emerging priorities. We also discussed how these bodies will work with other structures within the UK's science, technology and innovation ecosystem, including UKRI and the Government Office for Science, and how they will engage with UK industry.

Geographic Reach National
Primary Audience Policymakers/politicians
Results and Impact Attending this debate at the Royal Society was aimed at exploring and discussing the challenges and opportunities of preparing the next generation for a technological life and bridging the technical skills gap. The debate focused on the contributions of schools and FE colleges to post-16 technical education and how the right skills can be taught pre-16 to enable post-16 technical education to be a success. It also aimed to examine whether the role of Further Education is fully understood in discussions about post-16 and post-18 technical education.

One of the main outcomes of the debate was the recognition of the need for a more coherent and integrated approach to technical education, involving schools, colleges, and employers. The importance of developing practical, hands-on skills and knowledge was emphasised, as well as the need for greater collaboration between education providers and industry.

The debate also highlighted the importance of providing students with a broad-based education that includes not only technical skills but also other skills, such as critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving. It was recognised that technical skills alone are not enough to prepare young people for the rapidly changing world of work.

The impact of attending the debate was an increased awareness of the challenges and opportunities of preparing the next generation for a technological life and the importance of bridging the technical skills gap. It provided insights into the different perspectives and approaches to technical education and highlighted the need for a more integrated and collaborative approach. The debate also provided an opportunity to network with other professionals in the field and to exchange ideas and experiences.

Results and Impact As humans increasingly interact (and even collaborate) with AI systems during decision-making, creative exercises, and other tasks, appropriate trust and reliance are necessary to ensure proper usage and adoption of these systems. Specifically, people should understand when to trust or rely on an algorithm's outputs and when to override them. While significant research focus has aimed to measure and promote trust in human-AI interaction, the field lacks synthesized definitions and understanding of results across contexts. Indeed, conceptualizing trust and reliance, and identifying the best ways to measure these constructs and effectively shapethem in human-AI interactions remains a challenge.This workshop aims to establish building appropriate trust and reliance on (imperfect) AI systems as a vital, yet under-explored research problem.

The workshop will provide a venue for exploring three broad aspects related to human-AI trust:

How do we clarify definitions and frameworks relevant to human-AI trust and reliance (e.g., what does trust mean in different contexts)?
How do we measure trust and reliance?
How do we shape trust and reliance?
As these problems and solutions involving humans and AI are interdisciplinary in nature, we invite participants with expertise in HCI, AI, ML, psychology, and social science, or other relevant fields to foster closer communications and collaboration between multiple communities.

The workshop will be hybrid. Participants can choose to come to New Orleans or participant online.

Results and Impact ABSTRACT
The use of human operator managed robotics, especially for safety critical work, includes a shift from physically demanding to mentally challenging work, and new techniques for Human-Robot Interaction are being developed to make teleoperation easier and more accurate. This study evaluates the impact of combining two teleoperation support features (i) scaling the velocity mapping of leader-follower arms (motion scaling), and (ii) haptic-feedback guided shared control (haptic guidance). We used purposely difficult peg-in-the-hole tasks requiring high precision insertion and manipulation, and obstacle avoidance, and evaluated the impact of using individual and combined support features on a) task performance and b) operator workload. As expected, long distance tasks led to higher mental workload and lower performance than short distance tasks. Our results showed that motion scaling and haptic guidance impact workload and improve performance during more difficult tasks, and we discussed this in contrast to participants preference for using different teleoperation features.

Description BCI Thursdays Next Generations: BCI-fi Part 2
Form Of Engagement Activity A talk or presentation

Primary Audience Public/other audiences
Results and Impact For many years, we and others have published papers noting that brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are becoming more prominent. This is apparent in many ways, including academic and medical publications, BCI-related commercial activity, popular media attention, and activities like BCI-themed conferences, classes, hackathons, and professional organizations such as the BCI Society. However, BCIs have also been getting attention since before the invention of BCIs through BCI-fi, which means BCI-related science fiction (Allison, 2009). This growing subcategory of science fiction merits further study. In addition to academic curiosity, science fiction influences public perceptions of science and its role in society. We often speak with laypeople whose views about BCIs are based on BCI-fi - often without realizing it. Thus, studying how BCI-fi affects, and is affected by, real-world BCI activities could help us understand and influence BCI directions and applications. Efforts like these could also help improve both the quality, quantity, and diversity of BCI-fi. In this two-part event, we will have prominent speakers within the BCI-fi community to discuss their contributions to BCI-fi, their favorite examples of BCI-fi including movies, books, and podcasts, and next steps to develop, foster, or publicize "good" BCI-fi. We will be joined by Dr. Brendan Allison (UCSD), Andy Weir (author of The Martian), Dr. Eric Leuthardt (Washington University in St. Louis), Stephen Hou (host of Neurratives podcast), Dr. Richard Ramchurn (University of Nottingham), Dr. Jane Huggins (University of Michigan) and Dr. Robert Hampson (Wake Forest University).

Results and Impact I present importance of understanding the reception of public health messages for the management of the next phase of the coronavirus pandemic in the UK and beyond. Our research supported public health partners in addressing key challenges that the coronavirus pandemic presents in terms of understanding the flow and impact of public health messages in public and private communications. Our external partners were Public Health England, Public Health Wales, and NHS education for Scotland.
We also worked with a public involvement panel who acted as consultants and reviewers for the project.

We used a corpus linguistic approach to analyse 772,700 words across 10,393 comments posted by readers across a set of 50 news articles containing references to geopolitical borders published by The Guardian online. Specifically, we examined the language of reader comments surrounding five public health campaigns or measures. These campaigns were highlighted in keywords and collocation analyses.

The importance of the kitchen is undeniable. We use our kitchens to store, prepare, clean, cook and entertain. Therefore, the way we perceive and behave in this area - be it commercial or family orientated - has a big impact on our own personal wellbeing, health and safety, and that of others.

Our Connected Kitchen project will use multi-sensor systems to track and model the behaviour of people in commercial kitchen environments, in particular attitudes relating to hygiene cleaning.

We are in the process of applying for Ethics approval to carry out the first phase of our work, which involves a participant survey conducted before and after they undertake a kitchen cleaning task..............

Results and Impact An introduction blog to Horizons Round 1 Agile project FMCG:

Modern manufacturing methods make it ever more feasible to personalise products - but how precisely do consumers know what they want? Of course, this varies - but in practice people will usually leave some uncertainty, or 'leeway', around their ideal product [Lin18], [Wan13], [Wri75]. Viewed conventionally, this can be a problem (i.e., noisy preference data), but this project aims to take advantage of the opportunities that it brings. Individual-level product personalisation can be uneconomical [Ahe19], [Tse98], however it may be possible to use the uncertainty and flexibility in consumer preferences to locate shared, or at least overlapping, areas of preference (e.g., within 'consumer-archetypes'). This approach could represent a customisation 'sweet-spot' - leading to data-driven semi-personalised goods with scope for much wider use.................

Results and Impact An 'ethical hackathon' is a novel event developed by the Human Centred Computing group at the University of Oxford. It takes a twist on the traditional hackathon format by challenging groups of participants to identify ways to embed ethical considerations into the processes of technical design and development. The event took place on the 20th and 21st of October 2021, involved postgraduate students at Horizon CDT University of Nottingham, and was facilitated by Dr Liz Dowthwaite and Dr Helena Webb (Horizon Institute, UoN) who gave an introduction about algorithmic controversies and a summary of the key work within UnBias, ReEnTrust and TASHub within Horizon and, divided the students in 4 groups and invited them to discuss issues connected to algorithmic discrimination, bias and governance. After activities were completed, students were asked to work in their groups and set a design challenge to work on. The following day the teams presented their designs in front a panel of judges. The judges: Dr Virginia Portillo (Horizon, UoN), Dr James Sprinks (Earthwatch Europe) and Dr Laurence Brooks (DMU) gave feedback on the presentations and prizes were awarded.

Results and Impact "The arrival of the Omicron Variant (still sounds like the name of a modern jazz combo to me) and subsequent restrictions have got us thinking once again about the nature of performing online. Carolan took part in online folk club sessions in Zoom (Post 79) and contributed a pre-recorded video set to the online Nottstopping festival (Post 78) during previous lockdowns. There's little doubt that live streaming and conferencing technologies kept many musicians going during those dark times, and perhaps even brought some unanticipated advantages such as the clubs being open to people who could not normally attend in person (those who are living far away or otherwise find them inaccessible) and fuelling new kinds of creativity such as making videos. Those interested in a more detailed account of the benefits, drawbacks, and general impacts of taking folk clubs on line might like to read our paper "Producing Liveness: The Trials of Moving Folk Clubs Online During the Global Pandemic" that appeared at the Computer-Human Interaction (CHI) conference last year. However, while digital platforms may provide a valuable safety net for musical communities who are struggling to play together in extreme circumstances, no one can seriously claim that the experience of a Zoom concert is the same as being at a 'real gig', let alone a busy festival, either for musicians or the audiences to come to watch them.

Enter Bubbles. Bubbles is an attempt to create a new kind of platform for online music festivals as part of the Future Festivals project in the Horizon Digital Economy Research Centre at the University of Nottingham. Bubbles explores the idea of staging festivals in online virtual environments, shared 3D worlds in which performers and audiences can gather together. The aim is to create a rich online festival environment in which virtual performances can take place alongside other festival experiences.

The Bubbles software has been developed by Paul Tennent and Edgar Bodiaj at Nottingham and they and the wider research team are working with partners including the online festival site Stream Park and the company Live Cinema to test it out in partnership with various festivals. The first of these was Oxjam Beeston, the longstanding annual local grassroots music festival that raises funds or Oxfam and that has been a regular feature of Carolan's life over the years (Post 29, Post 70). Back in September we made our first attempt to stage a day of Oxjam performances in Bubbles as part of the wider festival, delivering one of the festival stages as a hybrid venue that could be attended by both online and physical performers and audiences........" continue reading: via https://www.horizon.ac.uk/103-bubbles/

Results and Impact Introduction blog to Horizon's Co-Production Campaign project Future Festivals:

I don't know if you noticed, but 2020/21 has been a bit of a rough time for festivals. No gathering in public spaces, no public performances, no sitting around on the grass with a glass of something cold discussing the latest band or the latest comedy performance. For many, the loss of such an integral part of our summers really hurt. Of course, nothing drives innovation like adversity - countless bands, performers and festivals turned to the internet to reach their audiences - the online festival arrived all of a sudden, with everybody doing the best they could with the tools available. Going online was an imperfect solution - leading to a substantially reduced social experience for many people, and many more simply didn't attend. However, audiences were distributed and expanded, local bands and clubs saw their audiences spread across the globe, and people could suddenly access content they never could have before - all thanks to the shift online.

Horizon researchers were part of this response: delivering the "Voxjam" festivals online in August and November of 2020. Taking a step back and learning from our experiences, we now seek to consider what is the future of festivals? Taking them online was not exclusively an exercise in making them worse - there were many benefits around access, diversity, flexibility and more. In this project we question how to take and keep the best aspects of online festivals as we stand on the brink of a return to normal physical festivals. How can online festivals stay relevant when competing with real physical events, and how can we take the best of that digital experience and bring it into the physical world?............

UPBEAT, formed an interactive 'digital park' and included local artists, community groups, schools and some of Nottingham's well-known arts organisations, including Nottingham Playhouse, Inspire Youth Arts, Inspire Libraries, Community Recording Studio and both the University of Nottingham and Trent University. In a step up from many online festivals, there were more opportunities for interaction - both with a video audience wall, so audiences and performers could see who's watching (assuming they wanted to share), and in chat at global, local and group levels. Being involved in Upbeat will helped us understand how groups consumed online festival experiences together and contributed towards informing the design of our platform (Bubbles)

Results and Impact A mid point blog about Horizons first round Agile project FMCG 'Uncovering Consumer Consensus':

It has been a busy few months for the Horizon 'Uncovering Consumer Consensus' project, with progress on multiple fronts, but lots still to do!

Early in the project we began constructive discussion and engagement with another research team in Horizon, focusing on responsible research and innovation (RRI) practices in research - including a preliminary session using the 'Moral-IT' ideation card deck (Urquhart & Craigon, 2021).

Following this, Work Package 1 'Giving decision makers what they need' quickly got up to speed. Ethics approval was obtained for qualitative studies involving both:

Focus groups - with decision makers working in Research & Development at one of our large FMCG-sector industry partners,
A wider survey study - designed to cast the net wider and engage decision makers across a broader range of companies and societal roles...........

During the visit, the attendees were introduced to the laboratory's cutting-edge technologies, including a range of robots, sensors, and assistive devices.

As part of the lab visit, I gave a guest talk on the topic of "Using Brain and Physiological data in Human-Computer and Human-Robot Interaction". The talk focused on the various ways that researchers are using data from the brain and other physiological signals to improve human-robot interactions and make them more effective and user-friendly.

The intended purpose of the lab visit and the guest talk was to introduce the University of Third Age cohorts to the latest developments in robotics and assistive technologies, and to provide them with an opportunity to interact with and learn from experts in the field. The visit aimed to inspire and educate the attendees about the potential applications of these technologies in their daily lives and the broader community.

The lab visit and the guest talk were successful in achieving their intended purposes. The attendees were highly engaged and enthusiastic, and many expressed interest in learning more about robotics and assistive technologies. The visit provided them with a unique opportunity to experience the latest developments in the field firsthand, and to interact with experts in the field.

Overall, the lab visit and guest talk had a positive impact on the attendees, as it exposed them to new ideas and technologies that they may not have been aware of before. It also served as a valuable networking opportunity for both the attendees and the researchers, and led to future collaborations and stakeholder partnerships in the field of robotics and assistive technologies.

Results and Impact The Foundation Future Leaders programme brings together a cohort of around 30 mid-career professionals over the course of a year, with approximately 10 representatives each from the research community, industry, and the civil service and wider public sector. Over a 12-month period, the group meet and discuss with senior figures from government, parliament, universities, large industry, SMEs, research charities and others. Just as importantly, Future Leaders present their own expertise, develop skills and make future contacts. The programme includes external visits and the development of an annual conference for a wider group of mid-career future leaders in science, technology, research and innovation.
I see opportunity provided by the Foundation of Future Leaders program as a platform to generate ongoing, open dialog with a group of people from diverse backgrounds and experiences, including government, industry, and academia. I will make use of meetings, drop in sessions and conference time offered through the Foundation of Future Leaders program to lead pin-point discussions that will address both social and technical challenges in the design, regulation and operation of trustworthy and socially beneficial autonomous systems which are designed as such in principle and trusted in practice by individuals, society and government.

Results and Impact Knowledge-exchange workshop: Pandemic and Beyond - Public Health, Communication and Healthcare
Presentation delivered at the Public Health, Communication and Healthcare Knowledge Exchange workshop held by the Pandemic and Beyond project at Exeter University (bringing together 72 Covid-19 AHRC projects under the same umbrella). We presented an overview of the Coronavirus Discourses project during the workshop which was an opportunity to connect with other AHRC Covid-19 research teams working in adjacent areas. The workshop facilitated knowledge exchange and collaboration between teams, leading to strengthened communication and impact strategies that will benefit individual project teams as well as ultimately boosting the profile of Arts and Humanities research, and its vital role in Covid-19 response and recovery.
This workshop brought together projects from two subgroups - Media, Communication and Public Health Messaging, and Healthcare and Managing Covid-19. Projects within the first group had strong connections in a focus on public health messaging, journalism, and the media, and were connected by an interest in how information and misinformation about the pandemic is spread. There was also a strong interest in communication in the second group, especially between healthcare services and those who use them.  Projects in this group have strong links in a focus on design, and on examining issues impacting healthcare professionals and the NHS. Information about the projects in the group can be found below. In this workshop, we had the opportunity to present our project and hear about other related projects; think about and share strategies for effective ways of engaging with different communities and stakeholders to effect change and create impact; think about and share strategies for effective, innovative and creative ways of communicating research; informally connect and network with other researchers; and feedback and provide input into the ongoing work of the Pandemic and Beyond team.

Results and Impact A mid point progress blog about Horizon's first round Agile project: MIDAS

Existing systems for managing user identities are service oriented: identities are limited to a single service and often assumed to refer uniquely to a single person - a naive assumption which is contrary to real-world practice. Therefore people have to manipulate services to manage multiple identities for a single person between and within different services, select which identities to use to publish information, and collaboratively manage identities on behalf of others within a group. MIDAS aims to better understand the socio-technical complexities from the perspectives of different stakeholders and translate these into recommendations and design patterns, that contribute to alleviating concerns in this landscape...................

Results and Impact An update on progress in the Horizon MeMa 2.0 project:

Following from the last MeMa 2.0 blog update, the team have been working to deploy a working MeMa system into the homes of participants. This involved the development of a mobile application which can be used with Android tablets. After the development stage, work began to create an instruction manual. This explains how to interact with the interface and highlights key features such as how to add, create, and view memories. In addition to providing technical help, the manual provides space for participants to note any reflections they have when using their MeMa and provides further information on tasks for upcoming workshops they will participate in...............

The pandemic heightened the use of digital technology due to the separation of those isolated at home, or in care and hospital settings. Horizon's Memory Machine is a prototype device, informed by previous design and testing with potential users impacted by memory loss. This iteration will deploy a custom built physical repository for digital memories in settings accessible to multiple users experiencing cognitive decline, along with care workers and family members, while preserving data protection and privacy of personal content.
This workshop involved members of the study team along with 2 study participants to trial software version 3.0 and discuss physical design requirements.

Results and Impact An introduction to Horizons Round 1 Agile project MIDAS:

In the social 'messiness' of the real-world, digital identities are not often neatly siloed within individual services and accounts. Instead they often intersect with each other, mirroring offline social interactions.

When we consider the example of digital media platforms, it is not uncommon for users to share their accounts, especially paid-for premium ones - such as Spotify Premium - with their friends, family or acquaintances. Also prevalent is the use of multiple accounts by a single user and shared profiles, wherein a subset of the account is rendered to other parties who might need support, for example children's or carer-patient profiles.......................

The roundtable will discuss the recently launched consultation on post-brexit reforms to the UK's data protection regime, with a specific focus on responsible innovation.

"Following the recent publication of the consultation on reforms to create an ambitious, pro-growth and innovation-friendly data protection regime that underpins the trustworthy use of data, we are hosting a roundtable to discuss this in relation to responsible innovation. Considering the UK's need to introduce agile and adaptable data protection laws that maintain high data protection standards without creating unnecessary barriers to responsible data use, we think that responsible innovation needs to be central to the conversation. Given the above, we would like to invite you to the roundtable to partake in what will be a fascinating discussion. "

Results and Impact A mid point progress blog about Horizon's first round Agile project Robots mediation Interaction:

Our project is looking at the role of cobots in mediating interaction. Cobots are distinct from robots in that they are designed as 'collaborative' and exist alongside those working with them, as opposed to being 'caged off' for safety.

We are exploring in a limited way, how service robots are used in mediating interactions between people, how 'trustworthy' people find those interactions and how they collaborate, to achieve a complicated task.

The Cobot Maker Space at the University of Nottingham is providing an ideal testing environment for us to both develop and deliver a Wizard of Oz (WoZ) platform - which will benefit other users of the space wanting to do research with service robots. Members of our team have contributed to earlier research related to WoZ.............

Results and Impact Introduction blog to Horizon's first round Agile project Robots Mediating Interaction:

Horizon's Agile project 'Robots Mediating Interaction' will develop our understanding of three key things:

How people perceive collaborative robots ('cobots') - how they think about /of them as artefacts, agents etc.
How the capabilities of cobots present advantages and disadvantages for collaborative activities with/around them, and how they compare with other technologies with similar 'capabilities' e.g., remote teleoperators.
How people 'discipline' or fit and adapt their interactions with/around cobots to manage collaborative activities.
We will explore these questions with one of the service robots in the Cobot Maker Space. This robot's capabilities include mobility, face recognition, text-to-speech, head and arm movement and the potential to carry objects in a basic way from one place to another..................

Results and Impact An update on Horizon's SoDis project:

SoDis is about visualising measures of busyness to support people's decisions about the places and spaces they visit. With that in mind, it became far too quiet with the restrictions in place for us to undertake our Human Counting Study in the Computer Science building as planned. As students returned to campus, we gained approval to run our study in UK-based university buildings by staff and students, subject to approval from building managers. We made enquiries of available WiFi data and found the busiest buildings. It will come as no surprise that they were all on University Park.

First we approached Portland Building's managers as they have the most number of visitors on any given day. The nature of the traffic through Portland's many doorways was explained to us. There were many visitors, entering and exiting from several doors. People's movements into and out of the building were multi-directional and fast-moving. It was apparent that Portland required more SoDis researchers to undertake our counting study than were available...............

Results and Impact Consumer neurotechnology is arriving en masse, even while algorithms for user state estimation are being actively defned and
developed. Indeed, many consumable wearables are now available that try to estimate cognitive changes from wrist data or body
movement. But does this data help people? It's a critical time to ask how users could be informed by wearable neurotechnology, in a
way that would be relevant to their needs and serve their personal well-being. The aim of this SIG is to bring together the key HCI
communities needed to address this: personal informatics, digital health and wellbeing, neuroergonomics, and neuroethics.

Results and Impact The Future Machine appeared and we lit up the tree with light boxes made by children from Miss Bird's class at Mellers Primary School in Nottingham who have been watching as the trees blossom, doing activities to celebrate the Spring and will be leaving messages for the future, on the Future Machine. Due to Covid-19 restrictions there was a limit on how many people could meet together this year so the gathering was small, the weather had turned from a heatwave to freezing with snowy conditions in the days before. We broadcast live from the gardens (see the short clip above) and a film of the moment will be available soon. Several members of the public witnessed the event in the gardens. One woman sat on the bench under the blossom tree to smoke a cigarette and talked with us, she said it nearly made her cry when she found out what we were doing and that we had worked with the local school children.

Results and Impact An introduction blog about Horizon's first round Agile project: Smart Domestic EV Charging project:

As the 26th global Climate Change Conference (COP26) commenced this week and following recent petrol shortages and soaring increase in energy prices, the imperative shift towards more sustainable fuels and patterns of consumption is evermore glaring. However, the low uptake of available smart technologies is evident of distrust in the energy sector in the UK, as well as the difficulties of achieving technology adoption in domestic life.

Horizon's Agile project 'Domesticating Electric Vehicle Charging (DEVeC)' will develop our understanding of the roles and implications of autonomy and smart technologies in residential electric vehicle charging. Over the next year, this project brings together a multi-disciplinary, multi-partner team to examine this, putting ordinary citizens central to our research through a methodology - design fictions with family interviews - that aims to get beyond the limitations of current consumer research.......................

I was recently approached by a journalist who is writing an article on the impact of covid-19 on park life, after having come across the WISEParks project. During the WISEParks project we developed a small device called a 'WISEBox' which can count the number of WiFi enabled devices passing within about 30m of the box.

Working with Nottingham City Council (NCC) we deployed these boxes around two large parks in Nottingham. Known as 'destination parks' both of these parks are the sort of place you'd make an effort to visit. You might go for a walk, a run, a swim, use the playground or hire a boat. Regardless of your reason for visiting the park, NCC were interested in using visitor counts to provide evidence for the effect of expensive park improvements, plan new concessions or simply plan maintenance..................

Results and Impact A introduction blog to Horizons Round 1 Agile project: hoRRIzon:

Technology is developing with overwhelming speed. Innovation in the technology sector is the source of great benefits to humanity but conversely also great harm. Through enabling technology developers and researchers to identify, understand and produce, not only what is possible but what is needed and wanted by society, technological innovation can promote social goods such as freedom, wellbeing and fairness whilst minimising harms both intentional and unintentional. With technology embedded in every single aspect of our everyday life and the digital economy becoming omnipresent, helping innovators to identify and follow a societally desirable course is vital.

Does this require other forms of innovation? A time to for innovators to take a different perspective(s) on their products? A time for more reflexivity? A time for slow innovation or slow computing? These are some examples of questions than may help steer this societally desirable course. Definitely this is an opportunity to re-think anticipation, inclusion, reflexivity and responsiveness in this area of rapid growth................
