DTP 2020-2021 University of East Anglia

Lead Research Organisation: University of East Anglia
Department Name: Research & Innovation Services

Abstract

As a top 10 UK institution for the quality of research outputs under REF2014, and a top 50 institution in the world for citation impact (THE World rankings 2019), UEA provides an excellent scientific environment for our doctoral researchers. In 2019, we launched the UEA Doctoral College, which brings together researchers across all of our Graduate Schools, enabling collaboration and innovation. Attracting new early career researchers and academic supervisors for future generations, the Doctoral College will enhance our existing provision for postgraduate researchers and improve the visibility of our research for academia, industry and policy makers.
The University has supported large-scale equipment initiatives in the Faculty of Science, including bids to EPSRC (X-ray, fluorescence/CG-MS), and capital allocation including a high-performance computer cluster. Based on our track record of excellence and current research priorities, our intention is to allocate the studentships in open competition to support the following subject areas:
High Performance and Theoretical Computer Sciences
Mathematical Sciences
Physical and Biological Chemistry
Engineering
The Associate Dean for Postgraduate Research in the Faculty of Science will provide the academic leadership for the EPSRC DTP award, and the grant will be managed by the Postgraduate Research Service in collaboration with the Faculty of Science Finance team.
An open call for PhD projects will be published on our website, supporting the subject areas listed above. To ensure a research training environment conducive to high-quality PhD projects, eligible primary supervisors must meet a set of criteria requiring: up-to-date supervisor and ED&I training; timely academic progression reporting; a track record of funding under the EPSRC remit; and a quality PhD training environment, including opportunities for wider generic skill development as well as research and project-based training.
The internal project sift process and interview panels will be chaired by the Associate Dean, who will ensure adherence to the DTP strategy and to ED&I policies. Following the internal sift process, projects will be advertised on our website: https://www.uea.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/research-degrees/phds-and-studentships, in addition to external sites promoting PhD funding opportunities. All shortlisted applicants will be interviewed, and successful candidates will be recruited through a fair and transparent process, based on merit. This approach mirrors our open call for studentships funded by the Faculty of Science, which will run alongside the EPSRC DTP process to maximise co-funding opportunities and the support for ECR-led projects.
