Results and Impact An expert in the interpretation of Darwinian theory has been elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. John Dupre is professor of the philosophy of science at the University of Exeter and director of Egenis, an Economic and Social Research Council Genomics Network project that researches the social impact of developments in genomic science. He was elected to the AAAS for his contribution to the history and philosophy of science, especially the interpretation of Darwinism. He said he had always aimed to oppose the dogmatic way that evolutionary theory is often presented and insisted that Darwinism remains a rapidly developing area of science. "Darwin was a brilliant scientist, but we have moved beyond him," he said. "I believe that this perspective is essential if Darwin is to be given proper credit as a scientist: science is about the progressive improvement of understanding, not rigid doctrine." Professor Dupre received his PhD from the University of Cambridge and went on to work as a junior research Fellow at St John's College, Oxford for two years. He then moved to Stanford University, where he remained until 1996. He returned to the UK to become professor of philosophy at Birkbeck, University of London and senior research Fellow at Exeter, where he was appointed professor in 2000.

Results and Impact Presentation at 'Models and Simulations 5', University of Helsinki

The aim of this paper is to explore a contemporary controversy in olfaction theory. Orthodox opinion about primary odor recognition takes shape to be the underlying key feature. However, this account faces several experimental problems and still lacks conclusive demonstration. An alternative account, referring instead to molecular vibration in the infra_red range, has been widely disregarded, though it has not been rejected on experimental grounds. By contrasting the two accounts this paper reconstructs the different strategies of modelling facts, conducting and interpreting experiments implicit in the competing theories. This comparison will be used to explore the extent to which experimental practice must be bound to existing epistemic assumptions in order to be accepted as 'evidential'.

Results and Impact The prevalence of autism spectrum disorders has risen steeply

over the last thirty years, and the clinical trend has been to

diagnose younger and younger children. But is younger always

better? Ginny will describe her PhD work analysing data from the

Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children to examine

outcomes in adolescent participants with autism. The research

suggests that a proportion of children who have severe autistictype difficulties early on may catch up over a period of years

without intervention, throwing into question the current drive to

diagnose ASD early.

Description Lehrman's dictum : information and explanation in biology
Form Of Engagement Activity Participation in an activity, workshop or similar

Results and Impact Developmental psychobiologist Daniel S. Lehrman wrote that, "although the idea that behavior patterns are 'blueprinted' or 'encoded' in the genome is a perfectly appropriate and instructive way of talking about certain problems of genetics and evolution, it does not in any way deal with the kinds of questions about behavioral development to which it is so often applied." (Lehrman, 1970: 35). According to Lehrman, it is legitimate to regard the genome as a means for the transmission of information from parent to offspring, but not to explain the development of phenotypic traits as the expression of genetic information. There is something prima facie puzzling about this claim- if the reason offspring resemble their parents is the transmission of information, then surely that information explains the development of the trait in the offspring?

Lehrman's dictum has recently been challenged by philosopher of biology Nicholas Shea, who argues that the information transmitted from parent to offspring in the genome is 'read in development' and that the inheritance of this information explains developmental outcomes (Shea 2007, In Press). Shea's application of 'infotel semantics' is a significant advance on previous attempts to use the idea of information to analyse the relationship between evolutionary and developmental explanations. It identifies a class of questions which have been neglected in previous accounts of explanation in biology. But it does not support the idea that inherited information is 'read in development'. In an important sense, Lehrman is still right.

Results and Impact Consumers can now shop online in a diverse and growing genetic testing marketplace. Users of this service post a sample of their saliva to internet-based companies in order to discover genetic information about themselves concerning ancestry, paternity, disease and other quirks.

In this seminar I will discuss a project concerning direct-to-consumer genetic testing for psychiatric illness, undertaken with Susan Kelly (Egenis, Exeter) and Sally Wyatt (e-Humanities Group, Amsterdam). I present initial findings from our analysis of company websites, concerning issues such as representation of genetic counselling, involvement of users in research and relations of trust.

This analysis has raised many questions, and as we move into the second phase of our study, involving interviews and focus groups with potential users, we bring several of these questions to the seminar for discussion:

What do we mean when we talk about users of direct-to-consumer genetic testing? Many researchers, like us, want to find and study users. Often we rely upon studies of potential users, acknowledging the discrepancy between what actors say they would do and actual practice. As we design our own study of potential user groups, we consider accounts about, and by, those identified as 'users' of genetic tests, from sociological questionnaires, hypothetical studies, YouTube diaries, autobiographies and authoethnographies. In doing so we question what it means to be a user, while considering what these accounts have to tell us about genetic understandings of the self.

Are users the same as consumers? Who do we understand to be consumers? Our own definition of consumers of direct-to-consumer genetic testing includes the pre-symptomatic individual, patients and their families, and physicians.

Results and Impact Paper delivered as part of the meeting, 'Revaluing Science in the Digital Age' at the Royal Society.

The meeting explored the challenges of managing 'big data' for science and society, and particularly the extent to which science itself is changing with the introduction of new data-intensive methods. Dr Leonelli, whose talk was entitled 'Shifting scientific norms in the digital age', contributed to an ICSU Advisory Note, Revaluing Science in the Digital Age, due be released shortly, which recommends strongly that investment is directed to the curation of data (not just their long-term storage).

Results and Impact Despite a number of powerful critiques, evolutionary psychologists continue successfully to popularise the view that there

is a universal human nature to be discovered through reflection on our evolutionary origins. One central and perhaps

insufficiently noted problem with evolutionary psychology is the extent to which it is based on an increasingly obsolete

and indefensible understanding of the evolutionary process. Reflection on recent insights from disparate fields including

genomics, epigenetics, and developmental systems theory not only highlights these weaknesses in neo-Darwinism and,

consequently, evolutionary psychology, but also offers some suggestions as to a more sophisticated understanding of the

relation between evolution and human nature.
