PI Contribution | The Summer Schools in Sociolinguistics moved to Glasgow in 2011 and have since gone on to be held at the University of Newcastle, University College Dublin, Trinity College Dublin, and in 2016 will be held in Lyon (France). It is safe to say that the funding for the SSS in Edinburgh in 2010 helped consolidate the position of this event on the post-graduate calendar improving and advancing sociolinguistic training and networking throughout Europe. Anecdotally we also know that the SSS 2010 established research partnerships and mentoring relationships between many of the students and faculty who attended. For example, students have gone on to work with staff at the University of Pittsburgh, staff have written letters of recommendation for several of the participants, and students who attended still write to staff asking for advice and comments on research programmes in places like Russia more than five years after the summer school was held. |
Collaborator Contribution | The continued vitality of the sociolinguistics summer schools has deepened networks for PG students across Europe and exposed them to a wide range of cutting edge researchers. |
Impact | The summer schools sometimes produce proceedings but the lasting impact of the collaborations are interpersonal and take the form of varied research partnerships which we cannot keep track of from this distance. |
