Abstract
Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Results and Impact | Materials developed in the grant were taken to Laygate Primary School, South Tyneside, and trialled with a class of 8 year olds to assess the effective of raising interest in language learning and cultural diversity Using turning point we assessed children's (mean age 8 years) knowledge of and interest in learning about other languages before and after a language awareness intervention, focussing on spatial language materials. Children after the intervention were more interested in learning a new language compared to prior to the intervention. This provides pilot data that spatial language can provide a useful means to raise interest in languages and language learning. Results and Impact | A two-day public engagement event directed at children and adults in the Centre of Life, Newcastle, as part of the Newcastle Science Festival This was a two-day interactive exhibit, comprising interactions a stall with a series of tables on which were places two large plasma screens with associated seating areas showing two films on loops, plus a central 'interactive' area where the scientists got the audience to take part in some simple mock experiments and card sorting tasks.
