| Description | The InHALE project had two main components: Firstly, substantive new analyses of existing datasets to elucidate the relative contribution of social and health factors as drivers of inequalities in health expectancy between geographic areas and individuals. Secondly, InHALE focused on the methodology of estimating healthy life expectancy from both cross-sectional and longitudinal data. 1. | Exploitation Route | InHALE strengthened the evidence base for using health expectancy rather than life expectancy (or SMR) in the resource allocation formula for NHS England to account for inequality and unmet. InHALE also strengthened the evidence base for the importance of including ethnicity on the death certificate. | Description | We have produced an edition of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries' Longevity Bulletin on the topic of Healthy Life Expectancy that can be downloaded from their website and has received a lot of attention. We have run four national and international workshops, three for early career researchers and one for UK local authority researchers on calculating healthy life expectancy. Each workshop used methodological and substantive findings from the project. Findings from the project on inequalities informed the debate on Scottish independence. Findings from the project were included in a review of trends in life and healthy life expectancy commissioned by the Government Office for Science's Foresight Ageing Project and are considered as central to the evidence base around the future of health and care. The project has featured in ESRC Society Now (Winter 2015). Results from this project have formed the basis for further analyses documenting trends over time in healthy life expectancies that reached a wide audience through national media outlets and informed the actuarial profession and care providers. Methods from this project are being used in subsequent projects to further understand past trends in health expectancies and future trends through the Population Ageing and Care Simulation (PACSim) model. |
