Shaw K (2012) Managing for local resilience: towards a strategic approach in Public Policy and Administration

Description This research examined the impact of European integration at a local level by examining climate change protest in Britain, France and Italy.

Across Europe, environmental activism now routinely takes place; every day, in every country. These activists are mobilising in a political environment that includes a powerful, supranational level of government - the European Union - but what effect does this have on them? Studying europeanisation or, 'the impact of European integration' is vital in understanding how change can be brought about, and sustained, in such a complex multi-level political system. But very little is known about europeanisation at the grassroots level, closest to the citizen.

This postdoctoral research points to two main findings:

*Europeanisation of the environmental movement is happening at the local level, but not in the places previous academic studies suggest we would find it.

*Social movement networks are the main driver for local level Europeanisation and emergent european environmental campaigns.
Exploitation Route This knowledge generated by this research is useful to those who work across Europe and want to better understand how issues travel across borders.

It is also useful to those who shape environmental policy either by writing it (governments) or informing it (NGOs) because it can explain how international environmental issues are interpreted at a local level.

Finally, it is of use to scholars of environmental politics, EU politics, or social movements because it advances the approaches and debates currently active in these disciplines.

Description During the course of this research the findings were presented and refined at a workshop for environmental interest groups in Scotland called 'Environmentalism in Europe: Thinking European, Acting Local'. They were also used in evidence to the Scottish Government's Second Draft Climate Change Report. In 2015 the findings of this work contributed to a workshop sponsored by the Political Studies Association and the ESRC Festival of Social Sciences designed to open discussions on the issues at stake at the UN Climate Change conference COP21. This event drew together academics with policymakers and climate activists from across the UK.

Results and Impact The workshop 'The Paris Climate Talk' Politics, Policies and Principles' was jointly funded by the Political Studies Association, the ESRC Festival of Social Sciences, Routledge and the University of Edinburgh Global Environment and Society Academy. The event was organised by the PSA Specialist Groups on Environmental Politics (for which I am a co-convenor) and French Politics. The aim of the event was to open up the discussions around COP21 the UN's climate change conference being held in Paris over subsequent weeks. The international perspective mapped closely onto the research agenda of my ESRC Postdoctoral Fellowship, and was successful in attracting over 50 people to listen to climate activists, policymakers, and academics discuss the issues at stake.
