INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY MODELS TO ACCELERATE SUSTAINABILITY TRANSITIONS - IPACST

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Engineering

Abstract

Transformations to sustainability rely on innovation with complex diffusion and adoption processes. The role of intellectual property (IP) and IP rights (IPR) in sustainability transitions remains insufficiently understood. IPR can delay transitions by blocking new technologies, but if used effectively can encourage private investments, knowledge sharing and collaborative learning. The project transforms our understanding of how intellectual property (IP) models accelerate sustainability transitions integrating theories and concepts from sustainability, IP and innovation research. To date, sustainability and IP research have been studied independently. This project contributes to the integration of both fields through frameworks that conceptualize (i) which, (ii) how and (iii) under what conditions IP models accelerate sustainable transitions, in connection with sustainable business models. Hence, we build an interdisciplinary research community that furthers our understanding of dynamic sustainable economic development.

An IP model typology, a sustainable business model typology and conceptual frameworks will be developed based upon case studies in clean energy and circular economy in developing and developed countries. With a Delphi study and simulations, the frameworks will be tested for further sectors. To create impact in industries at different levels, we develop and promote tools for selecting suitable IP and business models, best-practice cases and guidelines, awareness and training kits for key stakeholders such as policy makers, funding organizations, businesses and start-up incubators, education institutions and technology transfer offices.

Planned Impact

Publication:

We will publish the research findings open access in high-impact, inter-disciplinary journals (e.g., PLOS ONE, Nature, Sustainability Science, Research Policy, Energy Policy, Journal of Cleaner Production), national and international conferences (Academy of Management Conference; International Society for Industrial Ecology; Indian Academy of Management), and practitioner magazines cutting across sustainability, IP and innovation communities. Intermediary findings will be periodically updated in a dedicated IPACST website and social media. We develop and promote briefing papers for national and international funding bodies and policy makers.

Dissemination:

The dissemination will be target-group-specific primarily addressing three stakeholder groups including academics, practitioners and policy makers. To reach academics, we run specific academic conferences and create collaborative online group with IP and sustainability experts to distribute regular project newsletters, organize a special issue in a reputed, international sustainability and innovation journal, run at least one dedicated IPACST workshop event in Year3 in Cambridge with 50+ participants, publish a research agenda paper, develop a teaching kit, including theoretical concepts, and best practice cases which will be used for teaching of at least 6,000 students within the applicants', advisory board, and cooperation partners' network. We reach industry decision makers through practitioner articles, training and teaching kits, best-practice cases, decision support tools and guidelines. Supported by IfM ECS, cooperation partners and advisory board members in developed and developing countries, the training kits will be disseminated to organizations, such as industry associations, public governance bodies (e.g. EPO academy, Indian National Innovation Foundation), non-profit organizations (e.g. Engineers without Borders, Cradle to Cradle Association, Ellen MacArthur foundation), IP associations (e.g. European Intellectual Property Teachers Network, IP Awareness Network) and incubators (e.g. KIC InnoEnergy, Climate KIC, Social Impact Labs). To maximize impact we discuss and promote results at practitioner-oriented workshops and conferences. To reach policy makers and funding agencies (e.g. European Commission, Belmont Forum, UK research councils, Global Challenge Research Funds), policy briefing papers are promoted on country specific policy workshops.

Knowledge utilisation and realization:

Long-term global research community building, awareness campaign together with continual dissemination and outreach will create an ecosystem conducive for IP model driven sustainability transitions. The developed decision support tools and guidelines to select IP models for sustainability when practised will promote adoption and accelerated diffusion of sustainable technologies leading to pollution-free environment, safe living and work conditions. IPACST educates students on how to respond to environmental and socio-economic challenges through suitable IP models preparing them to master transitions to resource-efficient, societal, and economical sustainable societies. Direct-stakeholder interaction and dissemination to influential, multinational organizations and policy makers to shape future IP policies in support of sustainability transitions.

Description We have achieved the necessary final results of the project, which closed in 2022. The results clearly point towards IP being of integral importance for sustainability transitions, yet remains an under-studied topic that requires more funding and research. The role of IP for facilitating sustainability transition depends upon the type of IP model(s) used and the settings under which these models are adopted. A set of key propositions has been developed and validated through a survey. A specific briefing document for policy makers will soon be published. Other project results can be found on www.ip4sustainability.org, including an interactive teaching kit, with slide decks and case studies as well as a business toolkit for supporting companies to have more structured conversations about how IP can help them to achieve SDGs.
Exploitation Route We have completed in total about 28 case studies with all four project partners. The findings from the case studies have been used as a basis to develop business toolkits, teaching kits, and knowledge/policy briefs targeting different audience groups namely industry practitioners, academics, and funding bodies/policymakers respectively. Further, some of the case studies we have published present best practice to inspire other companies to use intellectual property to help achieve sustainability transitions. A number of research publications include several recommendations for future research.

Description The project mostly employed case study research. The participating firms have stated that the visual-assisted interview process using historic roadmapping techniques has been very helpful to them. They think the process can be helpful to them for strategic planning, plus they also asked to receive the digitised and visualised case study protocols, which consist mostly of four visual maps for each case study. A business tool kit has been developed based on the findings from the IPACST case studies and pilot tested with industry participants. A case study explaining the role of IP for humanitarian aid and social impact has been developed and pilot testing in different class settings and trainings. We have also produced a teaching kit that is available on the project website for free for other's teaching sustainability, innovation and/or IP in higher-education or secondary education (highschools/ colleges) or executive trainings. We also conducted workshops in partnership with the organizations such as the Solar Impulse Foundation and Responsible Innovation Summit. Participants included clean technology companies covering start-ups, SMEs, and large entities. We conducted interactive, guided sessions using visual mapping templates dedicated to discussing the IP strategies for sustainability transition and associated challenges. The participating companies benefited from each other through the discussions facilitated around IP strategies for clean technologies covering topics like choice of IP asset types and protection mechanisms (e.g., patents, trade secrets), IP related costs, and IP sharing mechanisms and tools based on the learnings from the IPACST project.
