Gendered Journeys: the trajectories of STEM students and graduates through higher education and into employment, in multiple global south contexts

Abstract

This project will investigate how far, and in what ways, gender may have an influence in the progress of students through higher education, graduation and progression into skilled employment in the STEM sector in India and Rwanda. This is important because science has a critical role in supporting global sustainable development that will not be realised unless it makes better use of the potential skills of women and girls. At present, girls and women are markedly under-represented in STEM areas both as students and in the workforce in most countries across the globe. At Higher Education level, only 35% of students enrolled in STEM studies internationally are women (UNESCO, 2017a). Addressing this problem is vital in ensuring equitable access to quality education and meaningful work, and is crucial for countries seeking to prioritise equitable economic development, speaking directly to UN SDGs 4, 5, and 6.

Both our countries of focus, India and Rwanda, currently have a severe under-representation of women STEM students in HE, and in relation to the skilled workforce (WEF, 2018), and there is a limited amount of research in these countries, as in many global south contexts, on gender and STEM issues post-secondary school (for an overview see e.g. UNESCO, 2017a). What is particularly under-researched is the gendered journeys of students once they have accessed university, and beyond into skilled employment (UNESCO, 2017a, EGHE, 2018). Moreover, most lower and middle-income countries do not collect detailed disaggregated data to document access, retention, transfer/dropout, and successful graduation at HE level, especially by institution and discipline (see Chanana, 2007). Neither is there information on the onward journeys of students after they leave education Our research thus seeks to address these gaps.

The project has been organised into 5 distinct work packages (WPs). WP1 involves secondary statistical data analysis of gendered patterns of HE participation and achievement, utilising available data in India and Rwanda, with UK data utilised for comparative purposes. WP2 involves largescale primary survey data with STEM students in both countries. WP3 comprises a range of in-depth qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews with three sets of participants in India and Rwanda: first-year STEM students and final year STEM students at a university in each country and employees in a key STEM employer in each country. All participants will be interviewed again a year later, to explore their experience over time, and for the second group, potential experiences of transition into employment. The team wished to acknowledge similar issues of under-representation according to gender in STEM in the UK, and also to contribute more equitably to the knowledge exchange between countries, hence WP4 involves secondary data analysis of a number of different, relevant qualitative/mixed method datasets in UK Data Service archives.

Responsibility for impact activities will be shared equally between partner HEIs. Academic outputs will include at least 10 journal articles to be submitted to high impact journals in appropriate fields. Non-academic outputs will include the development of gender-sensitive virtual support 'toolkits' , developed in conjunction with student participants; and gender-sensitive CPD materials developed in conjunction with STEM academic and industry staff, tailored to appropriate national/regional contexts.

Planned Impact

The Gendered Journeys Partnership Network are committed to developing and delivering, high quality impactful initiatives, building directly from the empirical evidence base produced throughout the project. Impact will be embedded within all work packages, and dissemination will be continuous throughout the programme, with diverse stakeholder needs revisited throughout. The avenues of impact, and specific outputs anticipated as a result of the project, will be developed and delivered via a set of interlocking activities, designed to maximise the opportunities embedded within respective user communities (through an iterative, and continuous feedback process online and locally).

The relevant user communities for this project consist mainly of private industry (employers within STEM), Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), and governments (local and national); particularly those in India/South Asia and Rwanda/sub-Saharan Africa more broadly, as well as the UK, and European networks. A range of activities will be linked through the following strategic framework, drawing on principles as set out by the Rethinking Research Collaborative's (2018) report for the UKRI, Promoting Fair and Equitable Partnerships to Respond to Global Challenges, which has influenced all aspects of the project design. We will be contributing in this phase 2 of the project by attending and contributing to discussion/advice to partners at a series of workshops designed to facilitate a range of Brazilian universities to implement gender equity initiatives at their universities similar to ATHENA SWAN.
Collaborator Contribution The project is led by Dr Diane Harris and colleagues at the University of Manchester. Dr Harris and colleagues devised and led Phase One of the Network and has devised and will lead Phase 2.
Impact The collaboration has only just started so there are no outputs/outcomes as yet.

Results and Impact The programme of events for the ARCadia Festival of Ideas was a two-week long festival celebrating the opening of the Mazumdar Shaw ARC launch. It was international, heavily media profiled by local news and international social media and live streams. Colleagues, students and members of the public were invited to more than 65 events over two weeks, mostly of workshops featuring University of Glasgow cutting edge research, but also featuring brass bands, a retro video game arcade, comedy and drag shows, an outdoor ceilidh, art exhibits, a virtual reality celebration of Robert Burns, and much more.

Results and Impact The Gendered Journeys project is an interdisciplinary, international mixed-methods project that explored gendered inequalities in India, Rwanda, and the UK using online surveys, interviews, and eco-mapping techniques to address persistent and growing gender gaps in STEM study and working, particularly in global south contexts. The team has engaged in a wide range of impact and outreach activities, including eco and network mapping activities at ESRC Festival of Social Sciences, ARCadia festival, Open house for the European Conference on Educational Research (ECER) 2023 as well as Reimagining the Contemporary in Indian Education Conference held at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, India.

Such activities have allowed us to engage diverse stakeholders - from high-level invited stakeholders meetings in Kigali in June 2023, to public-facing child-friendly events. We have since begun to triangulate our findings for a gender-sensitive virtual support toolkit to be launched in spring 2024, with recommendations for diverse stakeholders- from senior decision-makers in Higher Education Institutions to regional/ national policy-makers as well as STEM learners and learning-facilitators.

Results and Impact The onsite and online conference brought together different presenters, mainly scholars, to present papers on various aspects. It was hosted/held in Gandia - Valencia, Spain from the 12th-16th September 2022. The key theme for the conference was 'Bridges between disciplines in STEM and Social Sciences'. Gendered Journeys teams presented 4 different papers (in groups of 2) at the conference. Results and Impact The annual conference took place in Minneapolis, USA from the 18th-22nd April 2022. It brought together participants from all over the globe with presentations on diverse subjects, with the majority of presenters being scholars. Gendered Journeys Project members/partners attended the conference, that is UK, Rwanda & Indian. Different presentations on early findings were made on early findings from the 3 partner countries. The presentations were attended by conference participants and questions were asked, experiences shared afterwards. New connections were made, knew knowledge gained and best practices borrowed from the many different presenters on various aspects by scholars and other experts. Constructive comments on research findings presentations were received too.

Results and Impact We engaged a large group of adults and school children in an engaging activity to explore STEM as a career. With Adults, we explored enablers and challenges that affected their choice of a STEM career.

Activity: A creative drawing activity was conducted with children and adults who were encouraged to 'map' key people who have influenced their STEM engagement or impacted their educational journey.

The event overall reached 6,850 members of the public, 32.6% of whom had never visited the university before, and 77% said they better understood the relevance of research to society as a result of attending. One public attendee stated in their feedback, "Everything pitched perfectly for children/lay people! So welcoming, lovely community atmosphere".

Results and Impact On 14.02.2023, I participated as a panelist to The IUPAC Global Women's Breakfast, which was organized In the sidelines of celebration of international day of women & girls in science under the theme: "Coming together to chatter the glass ceiling in science". The event brought together people from all science disciplines to raise their awareness on breaking barriers hindering mainly women in science & develop strategies to drive a gender just progress in science. The panel session topic was on "Barriers to women's workplace equality and how to overcome them".

A participant in the event called us to reflect on WHAT WOMEN WANT. A couple of days of reflection, I now believe Women do not need to be taught how to be strong. Women have always been strong! Results and Impact Approximately 25-30 individuals attended the inauguration for Gendered Journeys' Happy Hours. This online networking event was intended to bring individuals who either experience/have experienced gender inequality in their STEM field or are involved in gender issues in STEM. This event lead to many discussions and brought collaborative initiative between Gendered Journeys and other groups such as STEM Equals, FemEng, and the PhD Society of University of Glasgow. This has brought about the organization of a future Happy Hour in association with FemEng and PhD Society. This Happy Hour will take place on March 18th, 2021; the theme of this event is Angela Saini's book: Inferior. The author will also make an appearance to discuss her book with us. Discussions have also been had with STEM Equals for a future Happy Hour.

Results and Impact The workshop was attended by over 60 members of the FutureYou club at the college of science and Technology in Rwanda, a few FutureYou alumni members and academic staff members from CST, University of Rwanda. In 2023, Our guest of Honour was the State Minister of Infrastructure in Rwanda Hon. Patricie Uwase. She spoke to students on her journey to cabinet, being one of the youngest members of cabinet in the country, emphasizing on the need for humility and hard work.

Results and Impact The Gendered Journeys international and interdisciplinary project team met in June 2023 in Kigali, Rwanda to connect regarding preliminary project findings and to conduct a high-level invited stakeholder meeting of gender practitioners, researchers, educators, industry managers and policymakers.The Gendered Journeys project (www.gendered-journeys.com) is GCRF-funded to explore gendered influences on the progress of students through higher education and into skilled employment in STEM fields in India, Rwanda and the UK initially via survey and subsequently with in-depth interviews and eco-mapping techniques. There was focus specifically on Indian and Rwandan contexts as global south nations looking to address the persistent under-representation of women STEM students in HE, and in their skilled workforces (WEF, 2018). We note limited amount of research embedded in these countries, as in many global south contexts, particularly on intersectionally gendered STEM issues in non-'western' contexts.

Results and Impact Presentation entitled 'Understanding the Gender Disparities in STEM research: Perspectives from India', presented by Saikat Maitra, Srabani Maitra and Barbara Read. Presented to Re-Imagining the Contemporary in Indian Education Conference, organised by the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, Kolkata, India, April 22nd 2023.
Attendees of the Conference included a range of academics from across India researching and teaching in Higher Education, including relevant HE governance/practitioners; as well as postgraduate students and third sector activists. There was a lively discussion after the presentation and throughout the conference.

Results and Impact Presentation entitled Race, Gender and Intersectional Inequalities in Academia: Progress and Resistance. Invited online presentation in July 2023 to 'Women in Science: UK-Brazil Gender Equality Partnership', funded by the British Council. The audience included a range of EDI professionals and senior management of a number of Brazilian higher education institutions. Findings from the Gendered Journeys project were utilised to help discuss international challenges towards achieving EDI objectives in HE in relation to gender, intersecting with other aspects of inequality.

Results and Impact This was a one-day event hosted by Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry aimed primarily at practitioners (i.e. lecturers in STEM and STEM professionals outside academia), policymakers in Education and Work in India; activists and third sector organisations, and current/past STEM students. Two panel sessions were arranged. The first panel speakers comprised members of the Gendered Journeys team as well as Dr Dipankar Das, Chief Scientific Officer, Department of Science, Technology and Biotechnology, Government of West Bengal. The second panel speakers included two Professors in STEM fields in Indian universities, as well as activists from the West Bengal Commission for Women and Bridge (a Kolkata-based LGBT+ advocacy group). Both panels were followed by audience dialogue, and a report has been developed for dissemination to event attendees and across policy and practice networks in India. The report collects together a range of recommendations that were generated through the dialogue between and among panel members and audience members.
