Games, push-backs and the everyday violence at the Bosnian-Croatian border

Lead Research Organisation: Aston University
Department Name: College of Business and Social Sciences

Abstract

I seek, through this fellowship, to disseminate my thesis' findings through the development of a strong publication record while continuing my policy outreach and engagement activities. To do so, I will (1) produce my monograph and publish it with the Routledge Intervention Series. To obtain feedback on my book in progress and expand my international academic network cooperation, I will (2) present the book chapters at 2 conferences. Importantly, to expand the thesis' impact-generating activities on migration and border policies, I will (3) write a policy brief upon my thesis' findings which will be published through the Foreign Policy Centre in London. The brief will discuss the most common forms of border violence against migrants at the European Union's (EU) borders and propose policy recommendations how to stop violence against migrants from a long-perspective. To ensure maximum impact of the policy brief, I will use the collaboration with the Foreign Policy Centre in London as well as funds (5000 euros) and collaboration of my current fellowship at the Istanbul Policy Centre to organise a workshop with migration and border policy makers in the European Parliament. Finally, I will (4) study Arabic at the Aston Language Centre to continue developing my language skills, which will have a long-lasting impact on my future academic research in migration and conflict studies.

Monograph
Whilst writing monograph is an ambitious planned programme, I have an established communication with the Routledge Intervention Series. Building upon a significant and novel data set presented in my thesis, writing a monograph during the fellowship is manageable plan.
-October-November: producing Chapter 1.
-December-January: producing Chapter 2.
-February-March: producing Chapter 3.
-April-May: producing Chapter 4.
-June-July: producing Introduction.
-August-September: producing Conclusion.

Writing a policy brief and organising a workshop
-June-July 2022: Producing the policy brief and publishing it by the Foreign Policy Centre in London, which has wide reach and attendance at its events is numerous and comes from policy makers.
-June-September: I will dedicate four months to plan the workshop and approach the interested speakers, including policy makers. During this time, I will also offer separate, bespoke briefings to their organisations. To do so, I will use the help of the Foreign Policy Centre and the Istanbul Policy Centre. The planning will also consist of contacting and confirming participation of the speakers and attendees, organising their flights and accommodation, negotiating space in the EU Parliament, ordering catering for the event, and producing the workshop programme leaflet.
-September: Preparing my presentation for the workshop and organising the workshop.

Oral presentations at conferences
I have already submitted the book chapter abstract to the International Conference on Peace and Conflict (15 February 2021). Submission for the British Sociological Association Annual (BSA) conference will be completed during the fellowship by November 2021. I will attend the BSA conference 13-15 April 2022 (approximate date) and the International Conference on Peace and Conflict conference 08-09 July 2022.
Learning Arabic
-October-December 2021 (TP1): two classes per week.
-April-June 2022 (TP3): two classes per week.

The fellowship will enable me to obtain support for my project through variety of peer-reviewed processes and support of the Centre of Forced Migration. The centre has strong ties in the EU Parliament and the Foreign Policy Centre, enabling me to broaden my policy impact-generating related activities (policy brief and workshop). Essentially, I will cooperate with Dr Amanda Beattie as my mentor due to her extensive knowledge of micro-political discourses, migration in South-East Europe. Dr Beattie's guidance will allow me to reflect on findings arising from my thesis, its concepts, and methodologies.

Description POLICY IMPACT I have organised an online policy event for members of the European Parliment on border violence along the 'Balkan Route'. I used this opportunity to share and discus key research findings with members of the EU Parliament and grassroot organisations aiding refugees in Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Together with Hameed Hakimi, we have published a policy report titled 'Migration from Afghanistan under the Taliban' (published with FES Afghanistan). PUBLIC IMPACT I have organised a public event on forced migration and climate change in the Mocking Bird cinema, Birmingham. Among speakers were a member of the European Commission, four academics researchering migration and climate change, and a filmaker presenting a movie 'The Weight of Water'. I have published two public media articles on refugee hosting and border violence with Aljazera English.
