Understanding how servitization can impact UK economic productivity and environmental performance
Lead Research Organisation:
Aston University
Department Name: College of Business and Social Sciences
Abstract
This programme will establish evidence on how servitization impacts both economic productivity and environmental performance (i.e., net-zero and the green economy), and use these insights to influence industrial policy and practice in the UK. It will explain whether, when, and how to encourage the adoption of servitization to maximise the economic and societal impact. The programme will begin by (i) developing a strong theoretical foundation based on prior research on business model innovation and value networks, then (ii) engage in theory building through collaborations with a range of industrial partners that are adopting servitization. These insights will (iii) enable econometric models to quantify impacts on productivity and environmental performances, and through experimentations with these (iv) identify a range of scenarios to maximise the benefits to the UK. Deliverables will include (i) an open-access repository for the scientific, policy, and practice communities, (ii) a set of reference models which will allow firms to translate our findings quickly to shape industrial best practices, and (iii) a series of policy and practice papers and associated workshops and events to influence decisions around industrial policy associated with productivity and de-carbonisation.

| Impact | Current highlights of impact achieved are: (i) Major global brand now researching the financing of a Capacity-as-a-Service offering for global manufacturers: researching global/regional As a Service (AAS) adoption trends and countries/regions where financial partners are most likely to be located; establishing the impact of this on industry go-to-market strategies including consideration for finance partner availability and trade flow and tax complexities. (ii) Konecranes, Finland, announced the launch of their 'Advanced Port Services' business model (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iktEVcsKLbI). (iii) 45 people are now going through our servitization course at 'Company A'- ie. the basics of SZ and how it applies to the future of the company. This has built an internal coalition in a global manufacturer, which is now focussing on the wider roll out of their as a service offering, as identified as a strategic priority for growth in EMEA. (iv). Another notable example of a change of company policy is 'Company B', based in the North East, which has transitioned to a performance advisory business model for its industrial products. As a result, its customers are now more efficient, competitive, and energy-efficient, benefiting from improved operational insights and support with Company B. |

| Title | AI-based tool for Sentiment Analysis of Servitization |
| Description | Dr Shereen Fouad collaborated with a final-year computer science student on the development of an AI-based tool for Sentiment Analysis of Servitization using Natural Language Processing and machine learning techniques. Together, they collected over 99,000 relevant tweets and employed various open-language models to uncover insights into perceptions of service offerings versus product offerings. The data obtained received ethical approval from the EPS Ethics committee for research and publication purposes. Our findings indicate a generally positive attitude towards the Servitization business model on the Twitter platform. These results were documented in the final-year student report.
