Technical Summary
The Confidence in Concept scheme is a key part of MRC’s translational research strategy and provides annual awards to institutions, to be used flexibly to support the earliest stages of multiple translational research projects. The award can be used by the institution to support a number of preliminary-stage translational projects. The projects supported should aim to provide sufficient preliminary data to establish the viability of an approach –– before seeking more substantive funding. It is intended to accelerate the transition from discovery research to translational development projects by supporting preliminary work or feasibility studies to establish the viability of an approach.

The assay was validated with both known and unknown drugs. The assay is based on 384 well plate and use of a spectrofluorometer, detecting luminescence from a luciferase-derived protein, expression by a parasite cell free lysate. |

| Results and Impact | A prototype of our fetal movement monitor and data from its use were displayed at the Imperial College Festival in 2015. This is the principal public outreach event for Imperial College where research projects in the college are displayed to the general public. Our display involved a prototype of the device that members of the public could handle and assess, as well as see data on its use and ask questions related to its function. Over 1000 people saw the display and the prototype. The exhibition triggered several inquiries as to the medical importance of fetal movement, and allowed the public to actually handle and even wear the monitor. Very positive feedback was received with several queries relating to the medical impact and subsequent and commercial availability of the device. |

The ELIMED project aims to demonstrate the validity of new approaches based on laser- driven ion sources for potential future applications in medical and other multidisciplinary fields, including hadrontherapy. In 2018, a User-oriented beam-line, ELIMAIA (ELI Multidisciplinary Applications of laser-Ion Acceleration) equipped with diagnostics and dosimetry end-points will be commissioned at the ELI-Beamlines facility in the Czech Republic with the main goal to perform proof-of-principle experiments, dosimetry measurements and radiation biology investigations at high repetition rate. The main goal of the 3rd ELIMED workshop is to strengthen the collaboration among the international research groups involved in this challenging project and gather new ideas, proposals and additional requirements from a broad community of users coming from different fields (Physics, Biology, Medicine, Chemistry, Material Science, etc.) interested in exploiting the availability of non-conventional (laser-driven) ion beams at ELI-Beamlines. |

This series of conferences began as the European Working Group for Cystic Fibrosis (EWGCF) with the first official meeting being held in Stockholm in 1970. True to the original tradition of the EWGCF, each year the conference is held in a different European location and is usually of 3 days duration. The conference scientific programme is put together by an invited scientific committee and includes topics covering the entire spectrum of CF related issues. Invited experts from basic science, clinical and social care give presentations within plenary sessions, symposia, workshops, special interest groups, and meet the experts sessions. | Results and Impact | Presented at the Bio-Inspired Materials 2016 Meeting. Based on the successful events held in 2012 and 2014 in Potsdam the scope of this conference was to provide an interdisciplinary platform for the discussion of novel developments and trends in the field of bio-inspired materials research. Accordingly, the whole spectrum of biological materials was covered. Topics encompassed the formation mechanisms as well as the characterization of complex-shaped and hierarchically structured multifunctional materials present in living nature. Based on this, a further key topic will be the consideration of these architectures as archetypes for the generation of novel functional materials with an expanded property spectrum. The conference will address bio-inspired materials based on organic and/or inorganic phases including their mechanical, optical, electronic and magnetic properties as well as actuated systems. Further discussions will be dedicated to materials, which display their function in contact with biological systems, e.g. tissues. Moreover, theoretical modelling of the formation, structure and properties of biological and bio-inspired materials will play a main role. The programme will comprise several invited plenary lectures as well as oral and poster presentations. The conference is supported by the priority programme 1420 (Biomimetic Materials Research: Functionality by Hierarchical Structuring of Materials) of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). |

| Results and Impact | On February 3rd - 5th, 2016, the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) will host the 2016 International Symposium on Nanobiotechnology entitled "Nanomedicine from discovery to clinical reality: therapeutics, delivery and imaging." The Symposium on Nanobiotechnology provides a forum for rigorous discussion of cutting edge science in the design, synthesis and fundamental study of nanotechnology and application in the areas of biology and medicine. Nanobiotechnology research encompasses an extremely diverse group of scientists working in the fields of physical sciences, life sciences and medicine. Fundamental research leads to translation of these findings into clinically applicable interventions, and this process will also be a focus of the meeting. The 10th annual Symposium on Nanobiotechnology will cover new materials for drug delivery and cellular interactions, sensors and diagnostics, and new imaging techniques, as well as biological interactions such as immunological responses and in vivo targeting abilities. World-renowned researchers are invited speakers and young scientists will be given the opportunity to contribute talks and posters. Where relevant, discussion will focus upon possible translational aspects and real world applications with an eye to the unsolved and unmet problems of the future that Nanobiotechnology researchers collectively can solve. |
