AMR Dx Global

Lead Research Organisation: University of Edinburgh
Department Name: Sch of Biomedical Sciences

Abstract

AMR Dx Global is an international network individuals and organisations focussed on training and capacity building in the field of rapid diagnostics to tackle the global threat of antimicrobial resistance. It operates in the area of human health, animal health and the environment. The network is funded as part of the Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (JPIAMR). It is coordinated by the University of Edinburgh and brings together partners from sixteen countries. The network will develop a strategic action plan to support the formation of the JPIAMR Virtual Research Institute (VRI). Diagnostics is one of the six priority topics of the JPIAMR Strategic Research Agenda and therefore of a core aspect for JPIAMR VRI. The new network evolved from the successful JPIAMR Working Group 'AMR Rapid Diagnostics' which identified barriers to development, implementation and use of rapid diagnostics to tackle antimicrobial resistance. AMR Dx Global will run a twelve month programme including meetings and structured data collection on existing strategies, needs and gaps in AMR diagnostics training and capacity building to develop the strategic action plan on training for diagnostics.

Technical Summary

AMR Dx Global is a transnational network focussed on rapid diagnostics training and capacity building to tackle the global threat of antimicrobial resistance through rapid diagnostics in a One Health approach. It is coordinated by the University of Edinburgh and brings together partners from sixteen countries. AMR Dx Global will develop a Strategic Action Plan on Training to support the formation of the JPIAMR Virtual Research Institute and focus on Diagnostics as one of the six priority topics of the JPIAMR Strategic Research Agenda. AMR Dx Global evolved from the successful JPIAMR Working Group AMR-RDT which identified barriers to development, implementation and use of rapid diagnostics to tackle AMR. AMR Dx Global will run a twelve month programme including meetings and structured data collection on existing strategies, needs and gaps in AMR diagnostics training and capacity building to develop the Strategic Action Plan on Training for Diagnostics.

Planned Impact

Rapid diagnostics is a cornerstone of the global fight against antimicrobial resistance. It is a key feature of global and national action plans on AMR including the current and future UK 5 year plan on AMR and its long term vision. AMR Dx Global will help addressing the teaching and training needs in the area of AMR diagnostics and therefore directly address the barriers for development and adoption of diagnostics. Through development and supply of the strategic plan, the network will directly impact on the successful creation of the JPIAMR VRI.
