Description Environmental monitoring and multi-morbidity in Northern rural China
Organisation Harbin Medical University
Country China
Sector Academic/University
PI Contribution Building from the fellowship project, I am working on a prospective project linking environmental monitoring with a cross-sectional multi-morbidity study. One study site out of the three in this new study overlaps with the study site in my fellowship, so can perform as a validation dataset for modelling work on indoor air pollution. I have designed environmental monitoring Standard Operation Procedures, questionnaires, and will perform training and QA/QC control for the fieldwork.
Collaborator Contribution My partners will design, supervise and project manage the cross-sectional study, and incorporate environmental monitoring components in the fieldwork data collection. We will then analyse the collected data together.
Impact No output to this stage. The collaboration is multi-disciplinary with the project partner being epidemiologist.
Start Year 2023

PI Contribution I have secured funding and will act as a co-supervisor of a Clinical Research Fellow who will work on the improvement of diagnostics and therapeutics in never-smoker, lung cancer patients and investigate the associations with air pollution. The project is funded by the Pan-London Cancer Research Fellowship scheme and will start in April 2022.
Collaborator Contribution Dr Alex Georgiou, Consultant Medical Oncologist at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, will be the first supervisor of the project. He conceptualised the research idea and we wrote the fellowship proposal which was funded by the Biomedical Research Centres, RM Partners, North Central London Cancer Alliance, North East London Cancer Alliance and South East London Cancer Alliance (Pan-London Cancer Research Fellowship scheme).
Impact The Clinical Fellow will officially start on April 1st.

Results and Impact DHSC requested evidence on whether it would be beneficial to make self-isolation (after being contact traced for SARS-CoV-2) legally mandated. We responded with a small analysis and then later built this analysis into a full research paper which was also forwarded to DHSC. Our contacts informed us that our work was definitely taken into consideration during policy discussions and we believe that self-isolation was legally mandated in part due to our work (although this decision was later overturned).

Results and Impact My work has been presented at SPI-M, a SAGE subcomittee, twice during the coronavirus pandemic. In both cases collaborators presented the work. However, I was co-lead on both the actual projects presented. SPI-M summarise results across multiple studies and then present the findings to SAGE, from which policy makers directly make decisions.
