Abstract

There are few subjects as topical as global warming and the associated importance of reducing carbon emissions. There is a concerted global effort to develop energy supplies from renewable resources and indeed there are national and international energy and carbon emission targets in place driving this research. It is extremely unlikely that any one technology in particular will achieve these goals - indeed it is fair to say that societal and industrial energy conservation may well prove to be the most important single contributory factor to reducing carbon emissions. Nevertheless, there is an evident need for the constructive development of a variety of low carbon technologies and almost certainly only a combination of such developmental approaches will prove successful. The novel interdisciplinary project in this proposal seeks to integrate two highly promising low carbon energy technologies - biofuel and hydrogen fuel cells.
