University of East Anglia NERC Impact Acceleration Account Phase 2

Lead Research Organisation: University of East Anglia
Department Name: Research & Innovation Services

Abstract

UEA will implement a strategic approach to generating impact from NERC funded research building on the combined strengths of UEA NERC funded projects, identified end user needs and NERC policy objectives. This will be achieved through the identification, mapping on to end user requirements, and launching Impact Clusters. 70% of the funding will be allocated to this stream of activity. The first potential cluster will focus on linking aspects of research relevant to water including its use, supply, management and effect on environments. This is an area of strength for UEA, builds on existing initiatives, is a close fit with NERC policy and objectives and is a major challenge both internationally and in the East of England. The outputs will include reports relevant to end users, a symposium to include researchers and end users and the creation of new links with end-users. End users are anticipated to include both businesses, policy makers and regulatory authorities. Funding will also be allocated to identify further potential clusters that could be developed in a similar fashion.

Resource will also be allocated to responsive mode applications for individual projects with clear plans to develop impact. 30% of the funding will be allocated to this stream of the activity that will build on the Phase I of the NERC IAA. This will be aimed at pump priming projects that will be able to take advantage of further funding streams available on the Norwich Research Park, including a new translational fund with a remit of supporting impact from all research disciplines.

Title Calendars (STREVA awareness raising in Ecuador)
Description 1300 calendars featuring pictures of the volcano drawn by local children were printed and distributed to local communities, risk managers and collaborators in Ecuador. 170 were sent to UK policy makers, programme leaders and collaborators.
Type Of Art Artefact (including digital)
Year Produced 2014
Impact The calendars acted as a symbol for the value the STREVA project (supported by the NERC IAA) placed on collaboration as evidenced by research interviews in early 2014.

Title Storm Surge 3D Infographic
Description In its inaugural year the Marine Knowledge Exchange Network, partnered with local creative industries to overcome the language and technical barriers in marine research communication. The philosophy behind this approach was to start to build capacity within the creative industries sector to understand the language of marine science to be able to better assist the communications essential for the realisation of long term impact around research outputs. This successful and mutually beneficial collaboration has resulted in the production of a series of infographics spanning various research, technology and local policy projects, such as the impacts of the 2013 Storm Surge on the Norfolk and Suffolk coastlines.
Type Of Art Artwork
Year Produced 2014
Impact The Storm Surge Infographic has been on public display at UEA and was taken "on tour" to stakeholder groups. It both communicates the impacts of the 2013 surges on the Norfolk coastline to a wide audience and demonstrates alternative science communication methods.

Title The Bid for Clean Water (short film, 2014)
Description A short film about water catchment research illustrating the financial and operational impact on South West Water, West Country Rivers Trust and Mr Rowe, one of the farmers. Filmed on location in Cornwall (February 2014). The film will be distributed to UK Water Companies, the EA, practitioners and via VNN, ESKTN, UK WRIP and will be available online.
Type Of Art Film/Video/Animation
Year Produced 2014
Impact Potential to contribute to financial benefit for water companies, farmers and environmental benefits. Ongoing activities with emerging impact.

Description Work funded through the NERC IAA has engaged a wide range of academics, and the Research Council, to understand their shared objectives leading to positive outcomes.
Funding can be awarded quickly and in areas that the University is strategically building its impact activity. Relationships can be built with other organisations to not only support impact generation but also to feed into strategic collaborations.
It has catalysed new collaborations and strategic alliances, and assisted in engaging an increasing number of academics.
Exploitation Route The projects supported by this IAA are adapting methods appropriate to their fields and stage of development to ensure engagement and uptake of findings by relevant beneficiaries.
