This research project aims to develop a novel approach to improve the measurement of 3D displacement fields from earthquake surface deformation, by combining established independent complementary techniques (Differential LIDAR (D-LIDAR) and Optical Image Correlation (OIC)). These 3D displacement fields provide information on both the fault geometry and mechanics of earthquake deformation, with especially valuable insight into earthquake ruptures within the shallowest portions of the crust. The techniques developed will be applied to two recent high impact earthquakes, the 2014 South Napa M6.1, and the 2019 Ridgecrest M6.4/7.1 Sequence, both in California, to improve our understanding of the rupture mechanics in these earthquakes.
