Abstract
I will carry out an exciting programme of research at the energy frontier of collider physics, linking measurements of the Standard Model of particle physics and searches for new phenomena. The CDF experiment at Fermilab is collecting unprecedented amounts of data from proton-antiproton collisions, and in 2007 the ATLAS experiment at the LHC will start to record even more energetic proton-proton collisions. My Standard Model measurements at CDF are designed specifically to have a high impact on LHC preparations, exploiting the unique reach of the Tevatron and using the full angular acceptance of the CDF detector to test thoroughly the dynamics of the strong interaction in a region where there has been until now little data. Furthermore these measurements will form the basis of a search for new physics at CDF with broad sensitivity to a range of particles, for example those predicted by theories of supersymmetry. My work at CDF will provide me with an analysis platform that I will pursue directly at the LHC, and I will make key initial measurements and searches for new physics using the ATLAS detector. By working in parallel in this way I will take maximum advantage of the CDF data while also using all my experience from Fermilab to make the highest possible impact on commissioning and first results at ATLAS.

Results and Impact | I restarted the Glasgow Particle Physics Masterclass in 2009, during this grant. I have run it each year subsequently, with 130 16/17-year-olds attending per year. Teachers return year-on-year with groups from across Scotland. Teachers report ongoing questions related to the day, and reconsideration of subject options for university studies. Teachers appreciate day as CPD. |
