Detecting cosmic rays with a spark chamber; connecting with particle physics and astronomy.

Lead Research Organisation: University of Birmingham
Department Name: School of Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

To illustrate directly that cosmic rays are raining down upon us; that the observed lines of sparks represent the trails of charged particles from "outer space"; to make the connection between the production of these particles (mainly muons i.e. heavy electrons) in the upper atmosphere and the production of new forms of matter in accelerator experiments; to point the audience to the exciting developments in particle physics being explored currently especially at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Cosmic rays make an excellent introduction into particle physics and astronomy: particle production in the upper atmosphere and the investigation of their source. The discussion can then be widened to other sources of radiation, to neutrinos and to gravitational waves.

Planned Impact

Letters are sent to all Heads of Physics in Midlands schools (over 300 in all) advertising the possibility of our demonstrating the spark chamber at their schools. Our schools Liaison Officer, Mrs Lynne Long, who visits schools over the whole country also advertises the demonstrations.
Teachers also hear of our work from other teachers.

Description Using the spark chamber to demonstrate cosmic rays from outer space has continued to provide a very effective introduction to astronomy and particle physics.
With the public's imagination being fired by new exciting new results in Astronomy and the ongoing huge interest in the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, we have been fortunate that our transportable spark chamber is still a popular feature.
Exploitation Route Demonstrating a real particle detector, rather than showing a computer simulation, is a very effective way of leading into particle physics and astronomy. Hence we receive regular enquiries, mainly from students embarking on projects, about the construction of our spark chamber.

Description The award has allowed us to continue demonstrating the spark chamber and cosmic ray telescopes at Midlands schools and colleges and at public Open Days. The spark chamber and cosmic ray telescope are a useful backup to talk on particle physics.
