Hyper-Kamiokande (UK Strategy for Long Baseline Neutrino Oscillation Experiments)

Lead Research Organisation: Lancaster University
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Planned Impact

This is a joint submission. Please check the QMUL (lead organisation) submission for the impact statement.

Description We had worked on the simulations of neutrino interactions in the proposed intermediate detector, TITUS. Our work has helped to hone the detector design and to determine the physical requirements of the detector in order to obtain the best possible data. We've also worked on the design of the data acquisition system (DAQ). The DAQ design will determine how quickly and efficiently data can be taken. We've worked on image recognition algorithms for identifying
low-energy neutrino events in the far detector, as these are particularly hard to observe but would hold important information. We've also produced studies of the expected increase in knowledge that we'd obtain if we had a second far detector sited in Korea. We've made significant contributions to the design reports for the far detector, Hyper-Kamiokande, the intermediate detector now called E61, and for a proposed second far detector in Korea.
Exploitation Route People who design electronics may be interested in our DAQ design. Those working in software may be interested in some of the algorithms used in our Monte Carlo probability-based simulations.
