Description A careful analysis of the optimal operating parameters for carbon and other commercially valuable isotopes has been studied. Critically the neutralization of carbon ions at various energies was simulated, showing over 50% population efficiency for a single atomic state is reached at low beam velocities. Potentially this may allow a significant reduction in the size of the eventual commercial unit. This will reduce costs, complexity and operational space requirements. This follows the trend in AMS since its inception, which has been the steady push to lower accelerating voltages, with the new CRIS method able to potentially reduce this by a further order of magnitude, allowing a truly table-top device to be constructed. The research demonstrated that an electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion source was the most effective method for producing a beam of carbon ions with sufficiently high intensity for carbon dating.
Exploitation Route This research has been used by Artemis Analytical Ltd to develop its carbon dating business.
