Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Planned Impact

Please refer to lead institution impact summary.

Description In this award we examined the development of a pilot system addressing the long-wave (YJH band) coverage for the ELT telescope spectrograph (now known as ANDES). A master comb (1-GHz Ti:sapphire laser) and optical parametric oscillator (OPO) pumped by this that provided coverage from 1000-2000nm. The project allowed us to test laser frequency comb stabilization and filtering concepts which have informed future science and engineering work for our continuing involvement in the UK ELT consortium and the international ELT-ANDES calibration unit consortium, in which Heriot-Watt is piloting the laser frequency comb technology.
Exploitation Route The outcomes inform the final design specification for a laser frequency comb for the precise wavelength calibration of the ELT-ANDES spectrograph.

PI Contribution We are working with Piotr Maslowski on laser frequency comb measurement and calibration procedures.
Collaborator Contribution Piotr Maslowski's group has provided training in PDH locking to our team.
Impact The outcome of 1 week spent in Piotr Maslowski's lab is that we have been able to transfer knowledge into the design of the Ti:sapphire laser frequency comb we are developing for the ELT.
