Origins of the Universe
Lead Research Organisation:
A/V Revolution
Department Name: Main Office
Abstract
Aims: To create a STEM themed music album and supporting materials that can be used to explain the 'Origins of the Universe'. Target demographics will be the upper secondary students from schools in deprived areas, upper secondary BAME students and the general public. The music album will consist of 7 physics themed rap tracks created with popular professional UK musicians. The tracks will be created after liaising with secondary school science teachers in deprived areas and establishing some core issues they face engaging their students in the classroom. In addition research will take place with leading STEM influencers from top science institutes around the world. Digital copies of lyrics and supporting educational worksheets will be made publicly accessible for free. There will be 2 music videos created to accompany the project and also short video interviews will be taken to help give an understanding of what it means to work in STEM in the 21st century.
Finally there will be 2 free public engagements of the science rap album. One will focus on live performance and explaining the project, the second will involve talks and a Q&A discussion with leading STEM influencers, artists and the general public.
Marrying the lyrics to popular urban genres of music will provide a novel approach to expose low science capital audiences to modern STEM concepts in astrophysics and particle physics. The content of the album will help to explain new scientific discoveries and communicate our understanding of how the universe works.
By leveraging partnerships with world leading physicists in public engagement, relevant scientific research and data can be collated and transformed. Utilising their scientific institutes and networks (e.g. CERN, Fermilab, LIGO, NASA etc.) and also using their expertise, high quality STEM materials can be produced with increased assurance of public accessibility. By working with popular UK musicians and creating high quality music, STEM topics highlighted in the project will easily reach 100,000s of people across the country. This includes national radio, streaming sites and online publishers that cater to a variety of demographics including low science capital audiences.
Interviews and supporting worksheets will unveil how science is actually done and the power of scientific thinking in modern technology. By collaborating with STEM Learning and a network of science teachers, the supporting worksheets can be tailored to fit requirements from the UK education system. This will aid existing STEM influencers in reaching students who are less engaged and therefore help to close the attainment gap. Both after and during the initial research phase, evaluation data can be collected whilst liaising with the teachers. Finally, there will be two different direct events open to the public. With this participants can receive high quality STEM engagement via Q&A with leading UK STEM influencers. Through these additional engagements, there will be a big focus on data collection for evaluation purposes.
By exploring the multiple avenues of engagement above, one can expect to see a reasonable increase in the science capital of the target demographics.

Planned Impact
The STEM themed music album will be distributed via digital streaming services freely accessible to the public including Spotify, YouTube, and Bandcamp. The videos & interviews will be uploaded to a YouTube channel. Consensus's website will host a webpage dedicated to sharing relevant supporting materials with the public. This includes file-sharing, lyrics, questionnaires, video interviews and track links. Partnering with a live music venue in London will facilitate the album launch party. A community space, education hall or university lecture theatre in London will be used for the Q&A event. The tracks, videos and supporting educational materials will be made available indefinitely.
Scientists, educators and communicators will be informed by utilising the collaborative scientists' network and Consensus' existing connection with IOP, STEM Learning, Art@CMS, STFC and CERN. Online articles and radio coverage with major UK publicists can be achieved using the existing networks of the musicians involved. In addition there will be a budget for digital promotion of the events including Facebook ads. The public engagements will serve as great networking events for STEM influencers and the general public.

PI Contribution | During the round table discussion I gave a presentation explaining the process of educating science through rap music and poetry. I explained previous examples of how the system has worked to inspire interest in physics, and how science rap it can be used to create interest in physics for students who are otherwise uninterested. Once the project is completed STEM learning will e able to access all the materials and distribute it across their network. I also gave a science rap performance and small Q&A for a STEM Learning 'Black history Month' Event in 2020. The discussion centred on physics experiments such as CERN, my STEM background as an engineer and why STEM is important. |
Collaborator Contribution | STEM Learning UK helped to facilitate the round table discussion and research with UK physics teachers, including an IOP physicists. The engagements allowed me to form a credible basis for the student's worksheets and supporting materials. STEM Learning UK also helped to find the relevant materials of the GCSE and A-level syllabus that should be included in the songs. |
