Exploring, Creating and Designing Our Universe
Lead Research Organisation:
AstroCymru (Wales)
Department Name: Education and Outreach
Abstract
The aim of this project is to inspire students from low science capital and high unemployment and socioeconomically deprived areas to continue an interest in STEAM subjects by exposing them to a variety of astronomy and space topics.
We also aim to inspire future space scientists and engineers as well as artists and fashion designers by demonstrating various art techniques using objects in the universe as subjects.
This project aims to increase:
- Enjoyment and engagement in cross-curricular STEAM lessons using space as a context
- Pupil aspirations and attainment levels in STEAM subjects
- Knowledge of higher education and career opportunities available to pupils who study STEAM
- Teacher confidence in teaching space topics in the classroom
- Teacher knowledge of STFC resources available and supporting websites
This project also aims to provide:
- Art and craft resources in order to aid school homework and continue creativity away from school.
- Clothing items that pupils have designed to help deprived families with living costs.
- STFC stationary resources such as pencils, pencil sharpeners, rulers and coloured pencils
- STFC resource activity books such as The Moon, The Sun, Space Rocks and Hands on Universe books

Planned Impact
Our AstroCymru Twitter, Facebook and Instagram page will be used to publicize the work pupils have produced through images and feedback as well as to advertise our project and promote STFC to not only a like-minded audience but also the general public.
Resources produced by pupils will be shown to their fellow school pupils and teachers as well as their families and members of their community.
AstroCymru regularly attends conferences such as NAM, IOP Wales events and the UKSA conference, and events held by Association of Science Education - Primary and the Primary Science Teachers Trust as well as being an ambassador for the Great Science Share yearly event.
This will allow us to disseminate the project to both the research and educational communities and along with Sarah Bridgland's links, to the Arts communities also.
This year our previous STFC project was promoted at Interact Cardiff during a plenary speech delivered by Emma Wride. This promoted our project to other STFC grant holders, other grant funders and science communicators who attended.

Results and Impact | 77 pupils took part in a workshop that in the morning session consisted of a presentation on various space topics including Solar System objects, Stars, Galaxies, Planetary Nebula, Supernova, Black Holes and the technology used to study them such as Telescopes and Satellites. Time was given for Q & A space related session after presentation. After the presentation we would then get the pupils in groups to think of and write 10 adjectives and 10 nouns related to space to brainstorm ideas for their poem. Each pupil then produced a space based Cinquain poem in order to reinforce facts learned from presentation and to enhance literacy skills. Pupils who felt confident enough to present their poem read them aloud to their classmates and positive feedback from classmates was given. In the afternoon session each pupil was given a size appropriate T-shirt, a pallet of a variety of fabric paint colours, fabric pens and various resources that can be used for stamping and printing. Pupils then designed their own space T-shirts based on what topic inspired them the most from the presentation. At the end of the session pupils were given various STFC resources such as activity booklets, pens, pencils, pencil sharpeners and a pack of coloured pencils. A CPD session was delivered to teachers after school which consisted of a presentation on STFC facilities, tour of STFC's website and how to apply for STFC resources. Post-Evaluations showed that 76% of pupils enjoyed our workshop |

Pre-Evaluation showed that 96% of pupils did not know anyone who worked in science and 62% have been to a science centre or museum. 50% of pupils regularly done science or art at home. Post-Evaluations showed that 94% of pupils enjoyed our workshop |
