Pixel-based Silicon tracker for R3B: preparatory work

Lead Research Organisation: University of York
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

In this project we carry out the preparatory work required in order for the UK team to undertake the construction a charged-particle tracking device for the R3B experiment at FAIR. The device is based on hybrid silicon sensor technology that can detect the charged particles and process the generated electronic signals on the same chip, which allows one to reach unprecedented position sensitivity and very low-noise detection levels. The assembly of the device requires high-precision placement that is undertaken by a robotic instrument and the sensors require careful handling in an atmospheric environment that is as free as possible from dust and other micro-particles. In this project, we aim to install and use such robotic instrument in a purpose-built clean-room environment.
