Abstract
Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Spectroscopy of B 9 via high-resolution ejectile-tagged recoil break-up
in Physical Review C
Description | This project concentrated on exploring the structure of exotic nuclei. Some light nuclei can exist in a so called clustered state; that is rather than the nucleus being a homogeneous mix of protons and neutrons, the nucleons clump together into smaller nuclei (clusters) within the nucleus. This research provided evidence for the rotation of such cluster structures by observing the probabilities of such states decaying by emitting one of the cluster particles. This is one of the few ways of determining whether cluster states have the same underlying nuclear configuration. To do this the project developed a unique set-up of detectors coupled to a large, high resolution magnetic spectrometer. This enable states spaced closely together to be identified and studies and their decay paths measured. |
Exploitation Route | The research has already been put to good use. At iThemba laboratory in South Africa the technique of ejectile-tagged break-up reactions used in the project has been employed with the K600 spectrometer, enabling 0+ states to be studied at zero degrees. The method is generally applicable to light nuclei, and this work has demonstrated that absolute decay widths can be measured on a state-by-state basis. |
