Exploring, Imagining and Creating Our 3D Universe
Lead Research Organisation:
AstroCymru (Wales)
Department Name: Education and Outreach
Abstract
This project aims to increase:
- enjoyment and engagement in cross-curricular STEAM lessons using space as a context
- pupil aspirations and attainment levels in STEAM subjects
- knowledge of higher education and career opportunities available to pupils who study STEAM
- teacher confidence in teaching space topics in the classroom
- teacher knowledge of STFC and ESERO resources and supporting websites
The aim of this project is to inspire students from low science capital areas to continue an interest in STEAM subjects by exposing them to a variety of astronomy and space topics. Using our proven awe-inspiring 3D educational space shows and hands-on fun, engaging 3D Space/Art workshops, AstroCymru will focus on inspiring the next generation of space scientists and artists as well as highlighting the benefits of further studying STEAM.
We also intend to increase awareness of the many different careers in the space industry and the arts sector. This will support raising attainment levels and career aspirations of pupils living in areas of high unemployment and child deprivation.
Extensive experience of working in primary schools in these areas has shown that pupils are unaware of the various career paths in the space industry and many have never heard of the UK Space Agency. AstroCymru will raise awareness of STFC facilities, STFC research and future career opportunities.

Description | This project reached 793 pupils from the most deprived areas of the S. Wales Valleys, where Free School Meal percentages were on average around 40% with some as high as 67%. We exposed these pupils from high unemployment areas to the various career pathways in the space industry that they did not know existed. Our 3D shows covered topics such as Solar System, Telescopes and Satellites. Majority of the pupils have never been to 3D cinema and found the experience highly entertaining and informative. This was evident from the screaming trying to capture various celestial objects coming towards them and the repeating of facts after the show. Feedback from a teacher said "Emma and Sarah have produced some amazing sessions and the children often say to me, "I loved today, we did no work and just had fun." However, the knowledge they have gained will stick with them forever. The best lessons are when children have had fun and don't even know they're working. I often hear my students come out with facts from the previous session and I am surprised they remember so much. Many of my pupils now say they want to be an astronaut, or astrophysicist in the future. They are even making up new jobs for the future, all to do with science and space." Samuel Raynbird Year 5/6 Teacher Bryn Awel Primary School We also delivered our project to out of mainstream education groups such as pupil referral units who provide education for pupils experiencing social, emotional and behavioral difficulties. Feedback from teacher said "The workshop was a huge success and we appreciate you funding this session for us. The pupils really enjoyed the activity, it was excellent with even some of our most challenging children engaging with the tasks. We would love to develop a partnership with AstroCymru going forward." Damien Murphy - Science Teacher. The visual effects of the 3D shows were extremely beneficial to pupils at Llanishan High Hearing Impared Resource Base in helping them understand space concepts that are not easy to grasp from 2D representations such as nebulae and gas planets. Whilst delivering the art part of the session we noticed many pupils sitting on resources such as colorful tissue paper. When asked why, they said that they have never had any before and wanted to take them home. This feedback led us to produce art packs for each pupil in order to take home. These included various paper materials and STFC pencils, pens and pencil sharpeners. Lots of teachers commented on how this will make such a difference to pupils well being and education as many pupils don't have these resources at home and if they don't have access to a pencil then they cannot do their homework which results in them falling behind. Pupils gained many lost skills (due to consequences of lost school time with COVID) such as creativity, dexterity, fine motor skills, problem solving and attention to detail. One teacher commented that "These sessions have been fundamental in igniting the children's interest for science again. In particular, the practical side of the sessions have allowed pupils to be hands on with science, resulting in greater engagement." Sharon Pascoe, Head at Fochriw Primary |
Exploitation Route | Knowledge gained by teachers from our CPD training sessions will allow them to create cross-curricular science/art lessons for their pupils and to disseminate their knowledge to other cluster schools. The CPD sessions also exposed teachers to the various STFC facilities and the work they do. This will allow teachers to encourage career paths and inspire their pupils to study science/technology subjects. |

Results and Impact | Due to the nature of the pupils at Heolddu LPC, evaluation forms were not given out. Instead teacher sent feedback of our visit. The workshop was fascinating, educational, unique, resourceful and brilliant. The pupils were engaged through out and thrived all day. Emma was superb in delivery, enthusiastic and passionate which came across. The content was scientific info meeting many learners needs. The workshop was well balanced with theory, visual and practical elements making it inclusive to all in attendance. Emma read the audience well and understood the academic needs of the pupils which enabled her to deliver at the right pace and level. The pupils hung on her every word and didn't take long for their confidence to grow and feel comfortable enough to ask questions. After learning about interesting facts we went on to the art side which was a unique way to understand space concepts. The young people really got into this, the creativity juices were flowing, and I believe a lot of this was down to Emma being so positive and motivating. Working with new materials created an air of excitement and this prompted a lot of independent working and learning through creativity and imagination. The sense of achievement was visible on the young people's faces when producing interesting pieces of art. The young people truly had an amazing day, all engaged and even some young people I thought would be reluctant to engage got involved. All were energised and happy, there was a feel good factor and one young person said Emma always makes learning fun. Chris Williams |

Results and Impact | Due to the nature of pupils at Ty Gwyn, evaluation form were not given. Here is feedback from teacher present at session. "We have just had our Astrocymru workshop at Ty Gwyn in Aberdare. It was without doubt, the most engaging, interesting and informative provision that all schools should access. Our learners have particular needs and challenges that Astrocymru prepared for and delivered with tact and compassion. This workshop was able to awaken the space scientist in all of us and leave a lasting love and yearning for more! Thank you Emma and team!" Damien Murphy Science Teacher |
