CP violation in B->3h decays

Lead Research Organisation: University of Warwick
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

The search for the source of CP violation that explains the baryon asymmetry of the Universe is one of the most important topics in contemporary particle physics. This project will analyse the phase space distributions of b hadron decays to three light particles, using amplitude analysis techniques, in order to investigate whether or not the CP violation effects seen in these decays are consistent with the Standard Model of particle physics.

PI Contribution I work as a part of the LHCb collaboration, analysing a subsection of the data collect by the experiment. I have also contributed to the collaboration in developing tools that can be used by other members.
Collaborator Contribution The collaboration provides extensive tools without which into would be impossible to analyse the data used for my research and also the expertise required to use them. Furthermore throughout my research I have been able to learn techniques and best practices from a wide range of members of the collaboration.

Results and Impact Every year around 50 A-level students from the local area visit the university for a day, in which they learn about the LHCb experiment and get to perform some basic analysis of a selected dataset from our experiment.
This year I was in charge of preparing and presenting a 30-minute introductory talk explaining the experiment and its outcomes and was also involved in helping the students while they performed the data analysis.
