"Disinheritance" -Identity constructions in the prose works and archives of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala

Lead Research Organisation: University of Exeter
Department Name: English

Abstract

This PhD project will engage with the novels, short stories and manuscripts of the Ruth Prawer Jhabvala archive to trace her engagements with issues of female and diasporic identities in her fiction. The project will focus on notions of dislocation and new identity formations, looking at how Jhabvala explores these in different settings - India, especially Delhi, and the US, especially New York - and in historical contexts, from the era of the British Raj in India to 1990s New York. The thesis will pay close attention to Jhabvala's own positioning as a writer, born in Germany, raised in England, and for whom India and the USA are 'adopted' countries. This lens will allow for important new insights into questions of a globally articulated citizenship and contribute to contemporary discussions around the construction of new identities that emerged in the wake of increasing cross-flows of people, a phenomenon that has shaped the twentieth century. Jhabvala's own trajectory from Germany to London to Delhi to New York provides a useful template for an analysis of how these shifts in location are explored in fiction. The project will focus on the narrative strategies at work to highlight the many faceted ways with which Jhabvala renders the Indian environment and also trace how these modes of representation shift once she moved away from India, both in her descriptions of the subcontinent as well as the USA. Particularly an analysis of narrative shifts in location and point of view will be important cornerstones of this study. It is proposed that the PhD candidate, by comparing archival manuscript sources alongside the final published novels will trace the narrative strategies of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's fiction from a deeply invested and embedded engagement with the cityscape of Delhi to her later writings on New York.

Another important element this PhD project will investigate is Jhabvala's method of writing. As is well known, her fiction traverses a range of different literary forms, from short stories to novels to life writing, as well as screenplays and plays. This engagement has facilitated a cross-fertilisation between her fictions, and the PhD will investigate how after her forays into screenplay writing, visual story-telling derived from the language of cinema evolves in her later work in particular. This narratological and manuscript-based approach will offer a new model with which larger questions of dislocation, cultural inheritance and exile could be explored beyond narrower theoretical articulations of diaspora studies. Such an investigation will allow for a comparative analysis of this issue alongside other female writers of Indian heritage, such as Attia Hosain, Anita Desai and Kiran Desai as well as male writers such as Rohinton Mistry and Salman Rushdie. Work on the Jhabvala collection will be supplemented by an engagement with archival holdings of the India Office Records and Library. This will enable the PhD to complement research into Jhabvala's fictionalisation of the British Raj in India, will give the project additional historical depth, highlighting the connection of her work with other holdings at the British Library, and facilitate a conversation around the wider issue of identity constructions in the Anglo-Indian novel.

PI Contribution I have been archiving a new literary collection, listing contents for research purposes and for preservation and conservation. University of Exeter supervised my thesis research. I submitted my thesis in July 2023. It was examined in early November 2022. I received the Viva report February 2023 and have minor corrections to complete by April 2023.
Collaborator Contribution British Library Contemporary Manuscripts have been liaising for cataloguing, for technical assistance with conversion of various media to readable data and in assisting liaison for conservation and preservation for the future. I completed the cataloguing of the collections, boxing and administrative preparation description of the details for future public access and it is currently with staff at the British Library to be imported on to their digital platform. I have editing access when this is completed.

Results and Impact The author requested an interview after the 'Ruth Prawer Jhabvala A Celebration' event held in July 2018 for an article subsequently published in a Sunday newspaper in India. I supplied quotes and answers to questions and sought permission for use of images from the British Library. The article was published and the author afterwards requested updates on the archive. This newspaper has a circulation of 700,000 people. Another subscription newspaper contacted me for an interview as a result of this article. I was also contacted by a University Professor in Mumbai who edits a journal and asked to write a book review from within my wider field for an upcoming edition of the journal South Asian Diaspora. The editors sent me a copy of the book of essays on Diasporic Studies which is relevant to my study of the author.

Results and Impact The journalist requested an interview after the Ruth Prawer Jhabvala A Celebration event held at The British Library in July 2018. I got advice from Exeter University's Press Office about questions which I received in writing. I sent text and quotes and I cleared permission for use of photos and slides with the British Library and copyright holders. The newspaper in which this is published has both print and online subscription and is read by the Indian Diaspora as well as residents in Delhi and India in general. It has a circulation of 96,000. Following on from the article the writer approached the library for access to materials for a biography of the subject of my research and was advised when these would be publicly available.

Results and Impact The author of the article asked for an interview with the British Library and permission to use images. The library asked me to respond to questions and I provided text for a regular article which features well known figures and I sent slides and photos requested. I followed this up after the article was published with contextual details about the images. The editor asked me to write these details in a letter form for a later edition for publication. This magazine is a subscribers' magazine aimed at the Parsi/ Zoroastrian global community, a community into which Ruth Prawer Jhabvala was married. It has a circulation of 10,000.

This was witnessed by a fellow curator, myself the researcher and two members of the writer's family. I contributed to the wording and labels of what became a blog post about their work, about literary archives in general and the work of research at The British Library. This blog article and the film which Conservation use for their public talks has generated questions about their work and about the Jhabvala archive.

Results and Impact This was a panel of four current postgraduate students of which I was one, all working with collections in the British Library. The panel was the last event of a full Open Day for researchers to hear from experts about how best to use collections, how to use the databases and the projects which are ongoing and a hands-on workshop with curators to view some materials. The panel was an opportunity for researchers and potential researchers to ask questions of current postgraduates and an opportunity for us to share practical tips. Several people thanked me afterwards for sharing some practical tips about organising work and ways of managing data and information.

Results and Impact The British Library sold out a full theatre to the public for an event which I helped organise called: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala A Celebration. I spoke about my research in the archive with slides and photographs from the archive at this event. The event included a conversation/interview between BBC journalist Razia Iqbal and friend of Jhabvala's- the former TV Producer Catherine Freeman; also with her film collaborator and Merchant Ivory Director James Ivory and fellow writer Anita Desai. The event featured introductions by the Library's Head of Contemporary Manuscripts Rachel Foss and Jhabvala's daughter Ava Wood. It also featured recorded readings from the author's work from Madhur Jaffrey and live readings by actors Felicity Kendal and Simon Cowell. The purpose was to draw attention to the archive at the library but also to celebrate the people whose collections the library holds. Media requests followed from this event and I supplied quotes and text for three newspaper articles, all published in India. There were requests for sharing the evening by those who could not attend and the film of the event was later in November 2018 shared on youtube. See the link on the webpage for the event.
