High Itensity Andromede Beams

Abstract

The rate of the 12C+12C reaction is central to our understanding of fusion in massive stars. The challenge in understanding the relevant reaction rate is that it exhibits strong resonances on and below the Coulomb barrier. In this project, we will work with colleagues at IPHC Strasbourg to lead an experiment using the new Andromede accelerator at IPN Orsay. The 12C+12C reaction rate will be extracted from brute-force studies using the high intensity Andromede beams. A particle-gamma ray detection system will be designed and commissioned to facilitate this study.

Description The STELLA project aimed to measure fusion cross sections of reactions essential to our understanding of the evolution of massive stars and explosive astrophysical scenarios.
The project overcame many experimental and engineering obstacles to measure very low cross sections where background was previously dominant. So far, direct cross section measurements of 12C + 12C fusion below the Coulomb barrier have been made using advanced particle-gamma coincidence techniques.

There are a wide range of astrophysical models with varying predictions that require experimental evidence to validate. The measured 12C + 12C fusion cross sections from the STELLA project vary over 8 order of magnitude supporting a particular model, known as hindrance phenomenon.
Exploitation Route The STELLA Project is still ongoing and plans to make further measurements and lower energies. First direct measurements of 12C + 12C fusion within the Gamow window is planned to be achieved in the next experimental campaign. With this success the project can move forward to measuring the fusion of heavier elements also important to astrophysical systems, for example fusion of 16O.
