Disc Galaxy Evolution Traced through Internal Structures

Lead Research Organisation: University of Portsmouth
Department Name: Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation

Abstract

In this project we will explore how internal structures (e.g. spiral arms and bars) impact the formation and evolution of disc galaxies. Lucy will investigate how the prominence of such features correlates with other processes which turn off star formation in disc galaxies, and tracers of future star formation potential (e.g. cold gas content). The project will combine information on galaxy morphology from the Galaxy Zoo project (www.galaxyzoo.org), with spatially resolved spectral information from the new SDSS survey MaNGA (www.sdss.org/surveys/manga/), and will also involve follow-up observations to measure the cold gas (neutral hydrogen) content of galaxies with radio telescopes (e.g. GMRT).

Results and Impact Astronomy on Tap is a brand, where Astronomers (mainly in the USA) hire out a pub and put on an evening of talks, activities and pub quizzes for the general public. I organised starting these events held in Portsmouth. This was the first city to host these events in Europe and have been very successful, with around 45-85 attendees regularly.
