Real-time cell metabolism by NMR

Lead Research Organisation: University of Birmingham
Department Name: Cancer Sciences

Abstract

We have recently published the first study of real-time metabolomics carried out by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) of living primary cancer cells from patients. Real-time metabolomics observes a time course of metabolism in cells. In this project a flow cell developed by Bruker will be adapted for real-time studies in cells, whereby we will study the differentiation of progenitor
cells to myeloid cells in the presence or absence of a specific transcription factor. Applying a novel NMR approach will open avenues for exciting new metabolic analyses in cell lines and in patient derived cells. The PhD candidate will be part of a leading national NMR centre, will be involved in the development of a probe for real-time NMR in cells with Bruker and will learn to prepare cell samples for metabolic analysis
